Extract from the Interview with Shashi Karandikar, Dhruv International Immigration Services Press Reporter - You have been in this business which is very niche area that not many people know about it. What made you think to start this business of providing Immigration consultancy? SK - I am a HR professional. I have held a position of Overseas HR In-Charge at very big corporate house of India. Since, I was overseas HR head, I have better understanding of both the functions i.e. HR and Admin. Generally, processing working permits or Business visas come under the purview of Administration Department and fixing C & B, designing deputation policies etc. comes under the purview of HR. I have hands on experience of both the functions. Having processed hundreds of visas I realized that there are many misconceptions about Immigration and overall overseas deputation at corporates may it be Business visa or Work permit. And when I realized that I can remove those misconception to the extent I decided to start my corporate immigration consultancy business. PR - How you decide the type of visa or work permit for the corporate employees? SK - I work on the instructions of corporate houses. Firstly, I try to understand the requirement of deputation or overseas travel. there are many factors to be considered, such as sponsoring company has PE or Joint venture partners in the country where they wish to depute their employees, what is the duration of working abroad, what is the experience and skills of employees needed etc. That helps me decide the most appropriate visa for the employees. PR - How you ensure the success of visa or work permit? SK - First of all I know the documents' requirements and lead time for the different types of visas or WPs which I recommend to the corporate clients for the specific deputation, I have strong global network of immigration lawyers. Perfect Documentation and the contents of the documents, Timely actions, ensuring proper communication flow and perfect co-ordination ensure the success of Visa or WP PR -What value addition you offer while delivering your services to corporate clients? SK - Most importantly, the cost effectiveness, secondly drafting the invitation and covering letters as well as designing the Job descriptions for WP/ Long term visas etc. While doing this, I maintain complete transparency and never compromise on ethics and values. The major challenge in smooth deputation is inviting company's willingness to absorb the foreigner on their payroll. That has to be met with flexibility for work permit or ICT or whichever legal long term visa to convince the host company. There are many other areas to be considered for overseas deputation such as who will run the payroll for deputed employee? who will make the statutory deductions and pay to the respective government? what would be the compensation and what happens to the Indian salary etc? All these factors are to be taken into account for overseas deputation.

Dhruv International Immigration Consultancy is a Global Immigration consultancy firm established with the clear objective of supporting corporate houses to handle immigration related issues efficiently. It has been providing it's consultancy to MNCs for more than 16 years. Today's topic is "Effective Deputation" What is effective deputation? In the first place, HR must make aware of the timeline of all the types of visas to all BDs or the persons dealing with foreign clients. Secondly, HR must be aware of the complete procedure of overseas deputation. Guidelines to obtain Long term visas successfully: Immigration/Labour department of every country is careful in granting work permits to protect the local employment. It is essential that the petitioner or the applicant company ensure that the foreigner coming to work has specialized skills and that the same job cannot be carried out by a local employee. Other than standard documents such as CV/ Mark Sheets/ Degree Certificates/ Experience Letters; Job Description is a vital document for obtaining a work permit/visa which demonstrates the specialized skills/ experience/ technical capabilities of an applicant. Generally, the immigration related activities are handled by the Administration Department which includes processing work permits/ visas, booking air tickets, Overseas Insurance, FOREX, transportation etc. However, the Human Resource Department takes care of issuing Deputation/transfer/assignment Letters, Fixation of C & B (Compensation and Benefits) depending on the COLA (Cost of Living adjustments), Payroll overseas, statutory deductions such as Income Tax/ national Insurance or social insurance/ social security etc. HR has many more responsibilities other than taking care of overseas deputation. One of them is employee motivation and retention. This is highlighted when an employee is being deputed for a long term and has to take his dependent spouse and children with him or her. It is important to know which countries allow families to travel along with the applicant at the time posting. Some countries have pre-requisites of an applicant staying for six months initially and then he/ she can invite the dependents. Applicants may get demotivated if this aspect/limitations are not conveyed to him/her in the right spirit.
