To flood your company with top-flight talent, you need strategic HR. I know: this sounds like common sense. But a lot of newer businesses wait to make that first HR hire. And, when they do hire HR, it is typically tactical HR (someone to take the myriad of questions and processes off of accounting). But if you wanna hire the best, you gotta bring in someone who knows how to find the best. Almost 15 years ago, I worked at the wellness startup called Shape Up and my *first* hire was Jackie Dube as VP of Human Resources. I was excited. But the two super entrepreneurial founders were beside themselves. Why did I hire an HR person and not someone to drive revenue or make product? I had a plan: I wanted the number of employees to go from 10 to 50 within the next year, and to do that, I needed Jackie’s talent. I wanted Jackie to "drown us in talent" so much so that we’d shock our competitors. She did just that. And because of that, we crushed it. When the company was eventually acquired by the Virgin group, there were 130+ employees and a great list of corporate customers. This success wouldn’t have been possible without the work Jackie put in—without prioritizing HR and talent acquisition from the very beginning.
