I spent the last day of my 20s, onboarding at the City of Beaverton, learning to be an elected official. When I won, I was the youngest ever in our city’s history. On the last day of my 30s, I’m reflecting on the lessons I've learned during this decade as an elected official. Top 10 Lessons I Have Learned as an Elected Official: One for Every Year of My 30s: 1. Make a friend before you need a friend. This whole job is based on relationships. Don’t let your first call to someone be an ask. 2. Lift as you rise. Use your connections to uplift others. Running for office and being an elected official can be lonely. 3.Kindness is the currency of the realm. When all else fails, leading with kindness often gets you one step closer to solving a problem. 4. It truly takes all levels of government working together to accomplish big things. 5. There is no shortcut to relationship building. See number 1. 6. Be prepared to make hard decisions. It's evident when elected officials don’t do their homework. 7. No votes should be rare. If you must vote "no," make sure you have done everything possible to bring people to your side. 8. Compromise is not a dirty word. Voters sent you to office to make things happen; nothing will go 100% your way. 9.This is a job of service. Ensure you’re in the role that brings you the most joy and allows you to impact the things that matter most to you. Because when it gets hard, and it will, the job will fuel you. 10.Know the rules and get the votes. You won’t be effective if you never accomplish things.

Parks and Rec Professionals wear a lot of hats Within the last year you may have opened a new Community Center, promoted a new Public Art exhibit, or published a Climate and Sustainability Action Plan. City Council’s demand action, and too frequently our day is spent in meetings, checking off HR “boxes”, or updating a job description because you just lost an employee to another city who could pay $1.25/hr more than you. Your 1-on-1 with your boss is next Tuesday and they’ll ask about your research and recommendation on a new policy for a temporary off-leash dog park. As a public servant, the skillset needed to succeed as a modern day parks professional has changed. There are times in life when you know you could not have done better! Where you have gotten every ounce of reward from something that should have never given so much. Victoria Sheridan's recent post brings back a flood of memories. It was pre-pandemic and I was working for a Seattle-based startup that shipped frozen meat nationally. They had a warehouse in Scranton, PA. We had outgrown the 3PL that we leased space from. It just so happened that there was a vacant late 1800's three-level former meat packing plant located a few miles away. I don't know what I saw in that space but despite the creepy feel - it was like our team. Our team was comprised of a mix of professionals and recently released felons. Like the team - the building was in need of a second chance. So over the course of a couple of months - we retrofitted this former meat packing plant into space that was not only usable but scalable. I could talk about the lives that we touched but with the recent fire that destroyed the building - it's better to talk about the building. It deserves that much. There was a draw bridge dock that lowered into the alley. It took seven minutes down and seven minutes back up. Holding down the button that powered the wench was the short straw that nobody wanted to draw. There was the parking garage in the back that had a ramp to the second and third levels that the original occupants used to house their horses, a hay loft, and the carriages that were used to deliver hams throughout Scranton. There were the smoke houses that we didn't use and were afraid to enter. There was a freight elevator that required the pulling of a rope to move it and would often run away. And there were sounds that the building made that I've never heard before and never want to hear again. But like our team - the space was functional, it was challenging, and it was ours. It became part of our culture and identity. A piece of history that resided in a part of Scranton that is in the midst of a resurgence. And while the three foot thick walls were no match for a fire that wiped away the physical presence of a time gone by - the memories will live on.
