If you had asked me over 20 years ago when I first began contributing, my answer might just have been that my workplace ran an employee-giving campaign and leadership there made it seem like an important part of our office culture. 'Why did I continue giving?' is a completely different question, however. Participating in those workplace campaigns and getting a chance to hear from partner organizations about the services they provide to our community truly opened my eyes. It’s easy to think of 'people in need of help' as some idealized group far from our home. The truth is completely opposite: I have learned that the people in need are my friends, neighbors, co-workers, my children’s teachers and classmates, and a whole host of people around me whose struggles are lessened by the community programs the United Way of Gloucester County supports. Now that I am one of the leaders at that same workplace, I work to make sure to enlighten new employees to these same truths as we conduct our employee giving campaigns. Take the time to explore what the United Way provides here in Gloucester County, and you’ll likely end up asking yourself how you didn’t feel compelled to give before."
