Senior level move - New HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd boss Mark Wild starts amid prep for final TBM drives New #HS2 boss Mark Wild marked his first day on the project with a site visit to oversee tunnel boring machine assembly works for the final drive on the project to Euston. HS2 #ceo Mark Wild will steer transition from civils to M&E fit out through to commissioning As new chief executive, Wild will oversee the project’s transition from a major construction programme to a working railway, with a renewed focus on controlling costs. Formerly #chiefexecutive at #Crossrail, he was widely credited, after joining the project late in delivery, for dragging it back on track and through the complex commissioning phase. He met engineers assembling two giant tunnelling machines – named Karen and Madeleine after prominent figures in rail and engineering – that will dig the final 4.5 miles of tunnel from the Old Oak Common station box to Euston. TBM Karen being assembled in the Old Oak Common station box HS2’s #London tunnels JV contractor, #Skanksa #Costain #Strabag, expects to start tunnelling in early 2025. Both tunnelling teams will take around one and a half years to reach the railway’s final southern terminus. The final approach to Euston will be completed by spray concrete lined tunnels which will then transition into three tunnels, to enable trains to be fed into and from platforms at Euston station. James Richardson, Managing Director, SCS JV, said: “We are delighted that the Government has given the green light to delivering HS2 through to Euston, ensuring the full benefits of the new railway are realised. “Over the past two years, we have continued with critical activities to ensure that we can deliver the Euston Tunnel and approaches quickly, and at the lowest possible cost.” Final plans for the future HS2 terminus station at Euston are still under review and HS2 is continuing to work with the Government and other stakeholders to draw up an affordable station design. https://lnkd.in/e78P_RCb

When it comes to construction, mass TBM is crucial.

The diameter of reinforcement in construction plays a critical role in determining the strength, durability, and behavior of concrete structures. Its importance can be summarized in several key aspects: 1. Load-Bearing Capacity: Larger diameters allow for more steel in the cross-section, which increases the overall load-bearing capacity of the reinforced concrete structure. This is crucial in ensuring the structure can handle the expected loads without failure. 2. Bond Strength: The diameter affects the bond between the steel reinforcement and the surrounding concrete. A proper balance is necessary to avoid slippage and ensure the effective transfer of forces between the two materials. 3. Structural Efficiency: Choosing the right diameter helps optimize the material use, ensuring that the reinforcement is sufficient without being excessive, which can lead to cost savings and a more efficient design. 4. Spacing and Detailing: The diameter of the reinforcement also influences the minimum spacing between bars and the detailing of the reinforcement (such as lap splices). Smaller diameters may require more bars or closer spacing, whereas larger diameters may reduce the amount of reinforcement needed. 5. Durability: Properly sized reinforcement with appropriate cover (distance from the surface) helps prevent corrosion and enhances the longevity of the structure, especially in aggressive environments. In short, the diameter of reinforcement affects the strength, safety, and economy of reinforced concrete structures. It needs to be carefully selected based on the design requirements, type of structure, and environmental factors. Whatever the standards, safety is always a choice. Current legislation for temporary site establishment is decades old and has not kept up with the changing face of modern UK cities.
