This is a good one!! The drill and blast method is a conventional technique used in the construction of tunnels and shafts, particularly in hard rock environments. This method involves drilling a series of holes into the rock, strategically placed according to a pre-designed pattern. These holes are then filled with explosives and detonated, causing the rock to fracture and break apart. After blasting, the debris, known as muck, is removed, and the process is repeated in cycles until the desired tunnel or shaft is excavated. This technique is widely used due to its versatility and effectiveness in a variety of geological conditions, allowing for precise control over the excavation process. Remediating old unmapped tunnel entrances Whilst working on rectifying a set of known underground mine tunnels RDS found this old unmapped and unknown mine tunnel entrance structure (3-4mm-Armco) complete with strip footings and slabs 3 metres below the surface. Right in the way of what will be major utility service corridor. We had to clear the overburden off and also dislodge and remove fifty years of cemented silt and stone within the armco structure before peeling back the roof and filling in the void. Excavation is the initial actual construction phase of a tunnel. There are various ways to dig through earth and rock to create that all-important tunnelway. The selection of the method of excavation is based on the geology and the tunnel construction method that is selected. For soft ground, the cut-and-cover technique and/or TBM application are most in use. For hard rock conditions, drilling and blasting or NATM may be selected. The TBM is assembled at the working place and set up to start boring. TBMs are very effective tools and can excavate large amounts of material while making tunnel linings at the same time. In this manner, tunneling over long distances might be very much preferred due to the reduction in surface impacts. The cut-and-cover method is applied to construct shorter tunnels through the unfavourable ground. In this method, a trench is dug, and then the excavation structure within it is constructed and backfilled with earth. This method is easier but may cause considerable surface disruption. The NATM is more flexible in its application to varying ground conditions. It involves the sequential excavation of small portions of the tunnel supported by temporary linings in series and then filled with permanent lining. This method is suitable for very complex conditions and allows real-time adjustments to be implemented based on ground behaviour. At Mohmand Dam, slope stabilization is achieved through a strategic combination of rock bolts, tension ground anchors, and benches, necessary due to the significant height of the slopes. Notably, stabilization starts from the top, with the top slopes being stabilized first, followed by the lower sections. An initial layer of shotcrete is applied to the exposed surface of the slope. Next, a wire mesh is installed, followed by the insertion of rock bolts and tension ground anchors. Finally, a second layer of shotcrete is applied.
