Boulders result from inefficient rock breakage after blast. This often increases production cost and reduce digger productivity. Damage to Excavator's bucket teeth, adaptor and final drive are few of the negative effect of mining a boulder-filled muckpile on equipment maintenance. Apart from utilization of rock breaker, tremendous boulders often requires secondary blast. Combination of explosives and accessories with higher VOD will surely result to excessive airblast and fly rocks. Therefore, proper selection of bit, explosive and accessories are very important for a safe blast. #UndergroundBlasting #Tunneling There are two reasons to go underground and excavate: i. to use the excavated space, e.g. for storage, transport etc ii. to use the excavated material, e.g. mining and quarrying operations. In both cases tunneling forms an integral part of the entire operation. The main difference between tunnel blasting and bench blasting is that tunnel blasting is done towards one free surface while bench blasting is done towards two or more free surface. Various drilling patterns have been developed for blasting solid rock faces, such as: i. wedge cut or V cut ii. pyramid or diamond cut iii. drag cut iv. fan cut v. burn cut Let me enlighten you more about the Burn cut drilling Pattern which is normally used in Mine development for most underground mines on the Copperbelt Province; #Burncut A series of parallel holes are drilled closely spaced at right angles to the face. One hole or more at the centre of the face are uncharged. This is called the burn cut (Figure below). The uncharged holes are often of larger diameter (101mm) than the charged holes (diameter 51mm) and form zones of weakness (void) that assist the adjacent charged holes in breaking out the ground. Since all holes are at right angles to the face, hole placement and alignment is easier than in other types of cuts. The burn cut is particularly suitable for use in massive rock such as granite, basalt etc.

Design of Surface Blast Blast design for surface blasting is a set of modeling that includes all parameters such as hole geometry, explosive type, specific charge distribution, firing time and sequence, which may vary according to the type of blast (ore, waste, cuttings, slope, channel, etc.), rock formation structure, production plan, capacity of mining machinery to be used and environmental constraints. The aim of modeling is to increase operational efficiency by keeping the processing cost at an optimum level. The suitability of the blasting design is evaluated by the cost relationship of the rock structure formed after blasting to the subsequent operational processes.
