Human Rights Council of Balochistan (HRCB)’s Post

We strongly condemn the excessive use of force by Pakistani security forces against peaceful protesters in Chaman. At least three people have been killed and 38 others injured due to Frontier Corps’ firing. Disturbing visuals show armored vehicles patrolling the streets and attempting to suppress the peaceful assembly. Reports also indicate that protesters have been abducted, and internet and media services have been disrupted. Since October 2023, residents of Chaman have peacefully protested the Pakistani government's new passport and visa requirements for crossing the Afghan border. This policy disrupts a long-standing tradition of easy movement that supported cross-border trade and the livelihoods of many, particularly small businesses. It is deeply concerning that the state of Pakistan has always prioritized force over dialogue. This peaceful sit-in has been disrupted by security forces several times with aggressive measures, including indiscriminate firing, detaining protesters and their leader, and even burning tents. This heavy-handed approach reflects a failure to address the protesters' legitimate concerns. We urge the Pakistani government to immediately de-escalate the situation, respect the right to peaceful assembly, and engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesters. We call for an independent investigation into human rights violations and a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and livelihoods of the people in Chaman.
