Pakistan plans to ban the opposition Pakistan Terheek-e-Insaf (PTI) Party, citing allegations of inciting protests, leaking state secrets, and illegal foreign funding. The government will also file a legal reference against party leader Imran Khan and two aides for high treason. This announcement follows the Supreme Court ruling in favor of the PTI, which declared them eligible to take their share of reserved seats in parliament, effectively preventing the ruling coalition from attaining a two-thirds majority. PTI leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was ousted in 2022 and jailed last May, was acquitted of several politically motivated charges during the past month, including one concerning his unlawful marriage, but remains detained due to new arrest warrants. HRF expresses concern over Pakistan’s ongoing prosecution of the political opposition and urges the government to ensure a level playing field so that all political contenders may participate in democracy equally.

The 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee headed by the BJP's Jagdambika Pal convened for the first time today to review the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which has sparked significant protests from Opposition parties and Muslim organisations, ostensibly for its aim to 'reform' the registration and administration of waqf properties through a centralised portal. With 44 proposed amendments, the Bill includes controversial provisions such as empowering district collectors to determine the classification of properties as waqf or government land. The Nigerian government's response to the impending protest exemplifies a egregious disregard for democratic norms, precipitating a crisis of accountability. The administration's attempts to discredit the movement and deflect attention from its own failures only serve to underscore its desperation and fear of transparency. The situation underscores the imperative of proactive governance, as the adage "prevention is better than cure" aptly illustrates. Ultimately, the government must be held accountable for its actions, and take concrete steps to address the pressing concerns of its citizens, lest it betray the fundamental principles of democracy. #accountablegovernment #Nigeria

Unofficial results reveal a significant win for the current ruling party, a result that PTI drastically disputes, heralding the date as a "black day" in Pakistan's history. The PTI party leaders have now called for an immediate halt to the release of results, while expressing grave concerns over the credibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan. The party is setting the stage for a series of protests starting this Friday. To gain a deeper understanding of this unfolding political drama, read the full article on our website. The present nature of the Ghanaian legal landscape regarding the right protest and demonstrate is unfortunately fraught with controversy, tension and animosity. The conversation is expansive, complex and requires a nuanced approach. Firstly, regarding the arguably obsolete Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) and the seeming abuse of its provisions by the Ghana Police Service by applying for injunctions to protests late (I wrote relating to this here: https://shorturl.at/4Nncm). Secondly, regarding what protesters can and cannot do within the ambits of the Freedom of Expression as exists under Article 21 of the Constitution. Thirdly, the manner through which our prosecutorial agencies handle protestors accused of illegality. It is in the best interest of the state and it's citizens that reforms are made to the existing legal system to better protect rights of citizens and allow for citizens to voice their displeasure. Elections cannot be the only way.

'In the meantime, the interim government will need to begin the hard work of restoring the independence of key institutions. Under Hasina, the parliament became a rubber stamp, the civil service and judiciary were highly politicised, and the media and civil society were closely controlled. While some of these institutions will quickly flourish in a more open environment, others will bear the scars of subordination for years to come. An immediate priority should be re-establishing the independence of the election commission to build confidence in the forthcoming polls.' https://lnkd.in/eWwKejCP

https://lnkd.in/dzD7Jh5U https://lnkd.in/dzD7Jh5U Clear and very bold messages given by alert citizens of India who are petitioners to ruling party , their leaders, and Election Commission that India is democratic nation and no one is above the constitution. All citizens , Prime Minister, and any political party leaders are Have the same right and accountability under the constitution. I hope United Nation AT Geneva, Switzerland will also look into this matter as law and order conditions are almost collapsed at India for almost 10 Years, from May 2014 onwards. That don't take anything and everything for granted in India. Don't assume that as holding highest position you can get immunity for any illegal activities against constitution of India like hate speech against any religion or community. Prime Minister doesn't mean he can engage in any kind of hate speech forbidden by law. Under the constitution, any ordinary citizens and Prime Minister are taken at Par . No one is above the law of the nation. #Hatespeech #Religioushatespeech #Dividingnationbyreligion #cretingenmitybetweenreligions #supremecourtofindia #UnitedNation

If you want to understand the reason behind George Galloway’s victory in the Rochdale by-election, a good starting point is to reflect on the fact that anti-Muslim attacks in the UK have soared by 365% since October. Many Muslims, including myself, now find it unconscionable to support either of the main political parties. The result is that the only political representation we can now hope for are independents who, most likely, will be confined to the fringes of British politics. #MKformulation What does MK Party stands for? I am asking this question because the existence of MK is certainly giving the ANC a headache. “To have Zuma on the opposite side is quite a concern for the ANC; it spells an uncomfortable campaign for the ruling party. Considering that he served the party for 64 years. Contrary to his earlier commitment to remain an ANC member until his last days. The MK party has not clearly articulated what it stands for and so far, it appears largely centred on Zuma’s grievances. Apparently, Zuma’s decision is rooted in his belief that the ANC no longer aligns with the values he once staunchly supported. MK hit the ground running following its launch in Soweto on December 16. The party is arguably one of the most talked about developments in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Jabulani Khumalo registered the party but it has since emerged that Zuma might have been the brains behind its formation According to the document, the party’s official name is uMkhonto Wesizwe, MK for short, named after the former armed wing of the ANC. A recently released official gazette of the IEC states that the M K party was officially registered on September 7, placing it firmly at loggerheads with the ANC, which says this is a symbol of their party that cannot be hijacked by another party. The party has not established any structures and will do so only after the election. This is to develop a “healthy organisation”, one in which people do not kill each other for positions. Zuma was clear that the formation of the party was a direct response to the current trajectory of the ANC, a common move for sidelined ANC members.

Yesterday, the British Parliament changed the way it operates because the Speaker was afraid that some parliamentarians would be murdered if they couldn't be seen to vote for a ceasefire in a war on the other side of the world. This isn't democracy. This is a country that is unwilling to live by its own rules in order to placate a violent mob. And efforts are already being made to sweep this reality under the carpet as they did with the murder of Sir David Amess. We can't afford that. We have to be honest and admit it: We have a problem with Islamist extremism that requires immediate and drastic action. Appeasement doesn't work. If intimidation and threats of violence produce results like the one we saw yesterday, this will only encourage more intimidation and threats of violence. The government, both the major parties, the police and the security services need to understand we no longer have the luxury of pretending this issue away. People who threaten violence should be arrested and locked up for a very long time. If the threats are directed against elected MPs, that is an attempt to subvert our democracy and should be treated as such, i.e. met with severe sentences. Foreign nationals who engage in, call for, fund or glorify violence, religious hatred or other violent extremism should be deported immediately. We must be honest with ourselves. If we do not act now, as sadly I am certain we won't, the result will be more violence and more intimidation. It is not a pleasant truth to have to admit but things will only get worse if we refuse to speak it.
