Vastu and Feng Shui, ancient practices rooted in Indian and Chinese traditions respectively, emphasize the harmony between the built environment and natural forces. While architecture focuses on aesthetics and functionality, Vastu and Feng Shui go beyond, aiming to create positive energy flow for occupants. Vastu Shastra guides placement and orientation of structures based on cosmic principles, while Feng Shui enhances balance using elements like water and wind. Though not universally embraced in modern architecture, these philosophies offer cultural insights and alternative perspectives, emphasizing the interconnectedness of space, energy, and well-being, making them valuable considerations for those seeking holistic design and a harmonious living environment. A Journey Through Time and Architecture - Episode 02 Rediscovering the Doric Order The Doric Order originated around the 7th century BCE in the western regions of Greece, particularly in the Dorian territories. It emerged as a response to the architectural needs of a society that valued strength, discipline, and simplicity. This order is considered the foundation of Greek architectural styles, predating the more elaborate Ionic and Corinthian orders. The Doric Order features simple, rounded capitals, fluted columns without bases, and an entablature with alternating triglyphs and metopes. Its design is characterized by strength, minimalism, and proportional harmony, emphasizing balance and stability in architecture. As the Doric Order evolved, it became a dominant style in mainland Greece and spread throughout the ancient Greek world, including southern Italy and Sicily. It was the preferred style for many temples and public buildings, symbolizing strength, democracy, and order. The Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens is one of the most famous examples of Doric architecture, showcasing the style's grandeur and simplicity. Represents the essence of classical architecture: simplicity, strength, and harmony. As we continue our journey through time and architecture, we are reminded that every style has a story to tell—a story that reflects the values, culture, and aspirations of its time. #ArchitecturalJourney #DoricOrder #GreekArchitecture #History #AncientGreece #ClassicalArchitecture #TimelessDesign #StudioCorinthian

Biophilia, literally the love of living things, is used to define our innate inclination to nature. In the 20th century, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm argued that contact with other living beings provides healing and comfort, while biologist Edward O Wilson, who is best known for coining the term biophilia, wrote about how this affinity towards nature is the essence of humanity. In design, biophilia has a broad array of applications. Early examples of decorative arts and interiors reveal an ever-present love of nature through plant and animal depictions. Water is worshiped in ancient Indian and Moorish architecture, and it takes a central position again in Baroque fountains. Modernist architect Frank Lloyd Wright, meanwhile, envisaged buildings that were integrated with their natural surroundings, full of plants, and inspired by nature. WANT TO LIVE IN AN UPSIDE DOWN HOUSE? Okay, so it’s not really someone’s home but it does allow me to raise the important topic of ‘Vastu Shastra’, which translates to science of architecture in English. Those of you in Asia may be more familiar with something similar called Feng Shui, from China. We are ultimately a product of our environment, which makes adopting Vastu Shastra vital when considering the purchase/rental of a property. The ultimate objective of this ancient science is to create a harmonious environment by maximising the positive flow of energy through the space. This is achieved by combining different elements, light & orientation relative to the Sun. Here are a few vital elements I look for when conducting a home/office visit: 1. Numerology - Is the door number in harmony with the occupant’s personality and/or destiny numbers? (this is based on their DOB) 2. Ideally there should be a main entrance to the unit/home on the East side of the property. 3. Rectangle or square shaped spaces should be sought, rather than triangles or circles. You needn’t worry if your property isn’t already optimized according to the above. There are always ways to make alterations to your environment. Your Destiny. In Your Hands. Origin of the Ibiza country house Architecture is a discipline that, like art, has the ability to communicate feelings, ideas and thoughts linked to the idiosyncrasies of peoples and territories. Through architectural design, physical space provides sensory experiences but, beyond inspiration, it also has a functional dimension. The vernacular architecture of the Mediterranean island has a lot to do with the character of its first settlers. In fact, the origin of the typical houses of Ibiza dates back to the Phoenicians. The civilization not only took control of the Mediterranean trade routes for years but also left its mark on the regions under its control through a rich cultural, artistic and architectural legacy. Punic reminiscences are also present in the country house of Ibiza, not in vain, it was precisely the Punics who colonized the island. The cultural and economic isolation that affected the Pitiusa during much of its history was, however, key to keeping the original typology of the country house intact. The architectural proposal, characterized by its simplicity and functionality, conquered the island's landscape and was passed on from generation to generation.

As we commemorate World Heritage Day today, it serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of heritage preservation in safeguarding our cultural legacy for future generations. Being in Italy, a country boasting the most UNESCO World Heritage sites globally, including numerous architectural marvels, prompts reflection on the significance of these treasures. Italy's architectural heritage is a testament to the nation's enduring legacy, showcasing a remarkable fusion of styles and influences. From the ancient ruins of Rome to the medieval hilltop towns of Tuscany and the Baroque splendour of Sicily, Italy's architectural landscape is a living testament to its diverse history. Each structure narrates Italy's past, from the grandeur of its cathedrals to the simplicity of its rural villas, weaving a narrative of cultural continuity and resilience. As architects, our role extends beyond design; we are guardians of these cultural legacies. It is essential to ensure that these structures endure for generations to come, serving as beacons of inspiration and reverence. Through careful restoration and adaptive reuse, we can ensure that these monuments remain sources of inspiration and pride for future generations. However, challenges persist in this pursuit of preservation. Urban development pressures and environmental degradation pose significant threats to our architectural heritage. Yet, it is through collaboration and ingenuity that these obstacles can be overcome, safeguarding cultural treasures for posterity. As we reflect on World Heritage Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving our architectural legacy. By honouring the past, let us pave the way for a more enlightened future, where heritage remains a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come.
