The percentage of Latinos in active duty rose again to 16% in 2017, according to a report done by the Congressional Service Review, and 17.2% in 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. The veteran population is expected to become more racially and ethnically diverse in coming years. “Between 2021 and 2046, the share of veterans who are non-Hispanic White is expected to drop from 74% to 62%,” according to Pew Research. “The share of veterans who are Hispanic is expected to double from 8% to 16%.” Latinos have earned more than 40 Medals of Honor, according to the Department of Defense. Thanks to those who served and sacrificed answering the call to duty and defending United States of America with valor and honor. #MemorialDay

HISTORY: "Remember and Honor" - #Memorial Day is an #American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27. Originally known as #Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the #Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country's first national #cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen #soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. It is unclear where exactly this #tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. And some records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in #Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared #Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day (source: History and Dutch Ministry of Defense/picture). #MemorialDay

This Memorial Day, as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, let's also consider how we can support our veterans who continue to protect us in new ways, especially in the field of cybersecurity. Veterans bring a unique set of skills to cybersecurity—discipline, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of risk management. Default action and decisiveness also make them invaluable in incidents response. They have defended our freedoms on the battlefield, and now many of them are on the front lines of our digital defenses. Here’s how we can honor their service: 1. Hire Veterans: Actively seek out veterans for cybersecurity roles. Their military experience provides a strong foundation for tackling cyber threats. The Honor Foundation is a great source. 2. Provide Training: Offer specialized training programs to help veterans transit ion into cybersecurity careers. This not only benefits them but also strengthens our security infrastructure. 3. Mentorship Programs: Establish mentorship initiatives that connect veterans with experienced cybersecurity professionals. This helps them navigate the corporate world and develop new skills. 4. Support Networks: Create support networks within organizations to address the unique challenges veterans may face in the civilian workforce. 5. Raise Awareness: Advocate for the importance of cybersecurity and the valuable role veterans play in protecting our digital assets. Just as they protected our nation, veterans now help safeguard our businesses and personal data. By integrating their skills into cybersecurity, we not only honor their past service but also enhance our security measures. This Memorial Day, let’s recognize the ongoing contributions of our veterans. They continue to serve and protect, ensuring our digital world remains secure. On July 4, 1776 our nation was conceived, with the Declaration of Independence, the classic statement being: “We hold these truths to be self-evident , that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. This did not ring true for persons of African descent kidnapped and enslaved and brought to the shores of America. They were not considered people, they were considered less than. Only three fifths of a person. It was not until January 1, 1863, using his war powers as President, Abraham Lincoln signed the “Emancipation Proclamation”, providing that ALL persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever FREE,” but it would not be until June 19, 1865 two and a half years after the Proclamation with the arrival of Major General Gordon Granger’s regiment in Galveston, Texas the forces of the Union were strong enough to influence to overcome the last of the resistance. He announced both the end of the Civil War and slavery. He read “The people of Texas are are informed that in, accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, slaves are free. This would end in jubilation and celebration from the now free men, women, and children. This day celebrated for 155 years is known as the “Juneteenth” as slavery fell in the last state in America two and half years after the proclamation. #juneteenth #happyjuneteenth #freedomday

Dominionist ideology in US military leadership: There is evidence that dominionist ideology - the belief that Christians have a divine mandate to take control of civil institutions and implement a conservative biblical worldview across society - has gained a concerning foothold within the leadership ranks of the U.S. military in recent years. Here are some key examples and impacts highlighted in the sources: 1. Maj. Gen. Michael A. Teichert, a senior Air Force general, has been accused of actively promoting far-right Christian nationalist and dominionist views within the military ranks through his public writings and online platforms like his "Praying at Lunchtime for the United States" (PLUS) website [1,5]. - Teichert's writings espouse dominionist rhetoric about Christians being called to "subdue" America as "enemy-controlled territory" and establish a Christian nationalist order through "spiritual warfare" against opposing ideological forces [1]. - His activities are seen as violating the separation of church and state by using his senior leadership position to advance a narrow, exclusionary version of Christianity within the Air Force [1,5]. 2. The U.S. Air Force Academy has faced accusations of pushing dominionist Christian beliefs and practices onto personnel in violation of church-state separation principles [5]. 3.
