Building ESG: Time for Talk is Over - Why We Need Stringent Regulations to Address Climate Change _______________________________________ The recent World Economic Forum in Davos painted a stark picture of the climate crisis, with experts warning of millions of deaths and trillions of dollars in economic losses by 2050 if we fail to act The good news is that there is a growing sense of urgency and a global commitment to tackling climate change. However, as the Davos discussions also highlighted, we are still not moving fast enough. We need to transition from talk to action, and a crucial part of this is ensuring that corporations and financial institutions are held accountable for their role in the climate crisis. - The urgency of the situation The science is clear: we are facing a climate emergency. The window for effective action is rapidly closing, and we cannot afford any further delays. Delaying action will not only make it more expensive and difficult to address climate change in the long run, but it will also put countless lives and livelihoods at risk. - The role of corporations and financial institutions Corporations and financial institutions play a significant role in driving climate change, through their greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and investments in fossil fuels. However, they also have the potential to be key players in the transition to a low-carbon economy. - Why regulations are needed Voluntary action by corporations and financial institutions has proven to be insufficient. While some companies are taking steps to reduce their environmental impact, many others are not doing enough, or are moving too slowly. This is where regulations come in. Stringent regulations can level the playing field, ensuring that all corporations and financial institutions are held to the same standard. - What kind of regulations are needed? The specific regulations that are needed will vary depending on the sector and the country. Stringent regulations are like guardrails on a winding road, they help keep us on track and prevent things from going off the rails. Climate change is a global challenge that requires coordinated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to sustainable energy sources, and mitigate its impacts. Without strict regulations, there's a risk that industries and individuals may prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability, leading to continued environmental degradation. Regulations provide a framework to set emission standards, encourage the adoption of clean technologies, and hold entities accountable for their environmental impact. They create a level playing field, ensuring that everyone plays by the same rules and works towards a common goal. Without such regulations, progress might be slow, and the urgency of addressing climate change could be undermined. For the second consecutive year, I had an opportunity to contribute towards my organization's disclosure for the annual CDP Climate Change 2023 & Water Security 2023, S&P Global 2023 Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for DJSI index rating and EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment 2023. There were some new questions this year on "Climate governance", "Lobbying and trade associations - Climate alignment", "Emissions breakdown by subsidiaries", "Material issues and materiality metrics for external stakeholders (Double-Materiality)", "Plastics mapping and impact assessments", "Water-related requirements in value chain engagement" and "Impact on Biodiversity" to name a few. It was a challenging yet enriching experience and my biggest learning was that it is imperative for an organization to have a robust ESG data strategy in place to streamline its ESG reporting & disclosure process.
