Elhedery, 50, has been the co-head of HSBC's Global Banking and Markets business since 2020 and previously led the bank's Middle Eastern, North Africa, and Turkiye division. Elhedery’s appointment comes as HSBC aims to drive growth, leveraging its strong Asian ties and historical legacy. Noel Quinn, who served as CEO for five years, will step down seeking a better work-life balance. During his tenure, Quinn navigated asset sales, the global pandemic, and led the bank to record profits. $28bn is a colossal achievement—a credit to you and your colleagues in a world where society's scoreboard primarily measures ROI. What is measured gets delivered. But I notice your reference to balancing your personal and work life. It implies a comparable cost, if not a toll on you and others. Having experienced a year - 2022 - in and out of hospital, mainly in isolation for chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant for mantle cell lymphoma and now thankfully in remission, I have reframed my attitude to life generally and to work specifically. This reframing has changed my facilitation work with boards - executive and main. I focus now on helping them find peace - even joy - at work on their boards (as unlikely and as mad as that may sound) and not afterwards. So, if you had delivered just 10% less - that's $2.8bn less - and you had reported $25bn, would anyone think less of you and your board? And if your board had spent $2.8bn MORE on the environment and society (including on your and your board's wellbeing and the wellbeing of all your people worldwide) and your P&L looked like this, Dividends available before ESG costs: $28bn. ESG costs $2.8bn. Dividends after ESG Costs: $25bn - would you say I am being unrealistic?

Great results

Once again, our financial results reaffirm our strategy. In the first half of 2024, clients took advantage of our global connectivity to do more business across the world’s most economically dynamic regions and invest their wealth with us. By focusing on Asia’s innovative businesses and rising spending power, HSBC delivered consensus-beating earnings performance, with group profit before tax at $21.6 billion - roughly half of that from Asia. Having paid our highest dividend since the global financial crisis in 2023, we will continue to share the fruits of success with shareholders. We have announced a second interim dividend of $0.10; given the strength of our balance sheet, we continue to buy back more stock and give our shareholders a correspondingly larger stake in the bank. Over the last 18 months we distributed over $30 billion through dividends and buybacks. We thank our loyal investors, and we are honoured to count so many Hong Kong families among them.
