Former Botswana President Ian Khama urges Germany to ban hunting trophy imports, challenging moves to weaken protections for threatened species. As the EU's largest importer, Germany can lead by tightening regulations under CITES.

Restricting hunting trophy imports. EU Member States are currently only required to issue import permits for hunting trophies from species listed on Annex A and just twelve species on Annex B of the EU Wildlife Trade Regulations. For as long as the import of hunting trophies remains legal, this import requirement must be extended to ALL species listed in Annex B to ensure that these hunting trophies are of legal and ‘sustainable’ origin. Protecting #wildlife is one of our key priorities for the upcoming Tenth Parliamentary Term (2024-2029). The Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill is scheduled to return to Parliament on Friday 22nd March after being dropped in October 2023. UK-based hunters currently engage in killing threatened and endangered wild animals for fun overseas, and bring "trophies" back home as a souvenir. In the last 50 years, there has been a 69% decline in wildlife globally. Implementing the ban would not only stop these animals being killed, it would help to enhance the initiatives to increase in animal-friendly tourism in areas where trophy hunting is currently rife. With a massive 80% of UK citizens declaring support for the Bill, its implementation would send a clear message of support for the protection of a wide range of species, including nearly 7,000 different animals, helping to stop the depletion, and potential extinction, of these extraordinary creatures. We now have another chance to move towards ending this barbaric act altogether, and need your help to impress the importance of this issue on our MPs. Please write to your MP at writetothem.com encouraging them to attend the debate next week, and show their support to #BanTrophyHunting. #HuntingTrophiesBill #WriteToYourMP #AnimalWelfare #ProtectAnimals #CreatingABetterLifeForEveryAnimal

#animalproctectionthursdays Only 3000 Grevy Zebras remain in the wild as numbers have declined rapidly. In Kenya, hunting Grevy Zebras for their skin caused their rapid decline in the 1970s until a total hunting ban came into effect in 1977 however, new threats have risen. In the late 1970s the global population was estimated to be 15,000 present-day estimates indicate only 3,042 animals remain present at minimum an 80% decline in international numbers. In Kenya as of 2018 an estimated 2,812. These species have undergone one of the African mammal's most substantial range reductions. Historically, they were found more widely across the Horn of Africa. EU is the world’s second largest importer of hunting trophies of internationally protected species, after the US. EU trophy hunters target a wide variety of species including captive-bred tigers. Trophy hunting is one of the most egregious forms of wildlife exploitation. Make #InternationalTigersDay count. Sign the petition to ask for a ban on trophy hunting imports of threatened and endangered species to the EU ➡️ hsi.org/notinmyworld Continuing to permit the EU import and export of such hunting trophies is inconsistent with the EU’s goal of protecting biodiversity worldwide. This must stop! #HSIEurope #ProtectTiger #TigerStripes #SaveTiger #TigerDay #StopTrophyHunting #StopTrophyHuntingImports

Next week's federal environment law reform stakeholder consultation is expected to include the Government's position on wildlife trade provisions. This makes it a really important time to let the Minister know that the reforms should include introducing a total ban on the import of hunting trophies from species listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
It is World Hippo Day and they need YOUR help! 🦛 Did you know Australia ranked 10th in the world for the number of protected mammals imported as trophies? Public opinion of trophy hunting is overwhelmingly negative but our federal nature laws still allow animals like the hippo to be imported into Australia as hunting trophies. This World Hippo Day tell federal environment Minister Tanya Plibersek that our federal nature laws should protect hippos by banning the import of hunting trophies into Australia. Take action here 🖊 https://lnkd.in/g_iV6h6U

The Meeting of the Working Group on the South West Asia Illegal Hunting, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds is underway in Saudi Arabia, 15-16 January 2024. Following concerns of the continued and intensified illegal hunting, taking, and trade of migratory birds leading to significant population declines, the CMS Parties responded by enhancing focus on practical responses and cooperative frameworks for preventing and prosecuting further these illegal activities, which cause unsustainable levels of exploitation.

The African wild dog also known as the painted dog or cape hunting dog is a wild canine native to Sub-Saharan Africa. Its distribution is patchy in East Africa living mostly in savannahs and arid zones generally avoiding forested areas. They have strong social bonds, stronger than those of sympatric lions and spotted hyenas meaning solitary living and hunting are extremely rare in these species. They live in permanent packs consisting of 2 to 27 adults and yearling pups. They are specialised pack hunters of common medium-sized antelopes & known for adjusting their hunting strategies according to particular prey species. Hunting success varies with prey type, vegetation cover and pack size though they tend to be very successful. Unlike most social predators, African wild dogs will regurgitate food for other adults as well as young family members. Pups old enough to eat solid food are given first priority at kills, eating even before the dominant pair while subordinate adult dogs help feed and protect the pups. #primateholidays #explore #wildlife #roamtheworld #wildlifeethusiasts #gameviewingspots #gamedrivesightings #wildlifephotography #nature #wildlifesafaris #exploremore #eastafricansafaris #wildlife_birdwatching #naturelovers #globallythreatenedspecies #wildlifeconservation

Very disturbing news the last couple of weeks from various sources in the Safari world! How sad and what can we do to stop the massacre of the last big Tuskers in Africa? Conservation is not only a succes story! 🥲 6 % of all of Africa’s Super Tuskers have been shot by trophy hunters in just a few months. Trophy hunters operating in Tanzania have shot 3 of Kenya’s Super Tuskers that had crossed into Tanzania (where trophy hunting is allowed). There were 13 Super Tuskers in Kenya’s Amboseli a few months ago but now there are only 10 Super Tuskers left. There are 50 Super Tuskers across all of Africa So 6 % of all of Africa’s Super Tuskers have been shot by trophy hunters in just a few months. Unscrupulous hunters hunt very close to protected areas Each Super Tusker is worth $10 million plus in tourism generated and they play a key role in the gene pool Tanzania must help prevent the hunting of super tuskers that cross over its border and help take action taken against unscrupulous hunting organisations that promote this kind of hunting. . . . #savetheelephants #tuskersofafrica #tsavotrustforelephants #conservationafrica

In August 2023, Field & Game Australia invited Joel Brice, Delta Waterfowl’s chief conservation officer, to offer his expertise on the current state of duck hunting in Australia. Australia, like several other regions across the globe, is facing increased opposition from anti-hunting movements, which have successfully outlawed the tradition of hunting in many nations and have attempted to influence significant conservation issues in North America. The United States and Canada have an edge over other countries when it comes to anti-hunting groups: A deeply informed, science-based approach to waterfowl surveying, hunting regulations, and harvest monitoring. However, the question remains: Will this be enough to protect the tradition of hunting in North America? https://lnkd.in/g4z9jqcF
