🛑 Our work to STOP LIVE EXPORTS 🛑 A sheep can be seen in a lorry awaiting transport. The sheep's head can be seen poking out between bars of the lorry. Every year, millions of farmed animals are at risk of facing long-distance export journeys, for fattening and slaughter. Journeys can take up to 96 hours and the animals may only arrive to be slaughtered or possibly kept in conditions that could be illegal in the UK. Animals could cross thousands of miles, across Europe, and face exhaustion, hunger and extreme temperatures, which can cause suffering and even death en route from these conditions. The suffering these animals could have to endure is unnecessary and needs to be stopped and prevented. How is this still allowed? As part of the Kept Animals Bill, the UK Government promised once before to put an end to live animal exports from Great Britain for fattening and slaughter. After 500 days in limbo, this was shelved in May 2023. This was a huge step backwards and the future of farm animals was uncertain. The RSPCA has campaigned for more than 50 years on this issue - which has seen millions of signatures on petitions, thousands attending protest marches and weekly demonstrations from members of the public at UK ports. But despite the strength of public feeling, the UK Government delivered a huge blow to animal welfare. Now there is hope - after the King's Speech announced the Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill in November, we have the opportunity to end live exports once and for all. We're pleased that live exports have been put on the UK Government agenda and named in the King's Speech, a significant step forward for #AnimalWelfare. We must continue to campaign and speak up for #FarmAnimals so that promises aren't broken once again. How can you help? You can enter your details in the link at the end of this post, and send our pre-written email to your local MP. Together, we can keep #LiveExports on the UK Government's agenda. https://buff.ly/3SXzIkd

Australia just made a historic decision for animals - the end of live sheep export by 1 May 2028. The phase out is based on recommendations from an Independent Panel who met with >2,000 individuals, held 96 stakeholder meetings & 22 forums, & received >800 submissions & 3,300 survey responses, combined with existing research and commissioned advice. Here's some highlights from their 200+ page report: - The Australian Government committed to phasing out live sheep exports by sea as part of its 2022 election campaign - Animal welfare is at the heart of the government’s policy - By their nature, live sheep exports by sea present a risk to animal health & welfare. There's ongoing concern among many in the Australian community about how sheep are treated on live export journeys & in export destinations. Documented incidents of poor animal welfare, sheep deaths & cruelty have driven concerns within the community about the continued operation of this trade - 80% of the written submissions noted support for the phase out policy - Of the respondents who indicated a possible time frame for the phase out, 92% suggested it should happen within 3 years - The Panel believes that the Western Australian sheep industry can be profitable and sustainable during the transition period and beyond the end of live sheep exports - The Panel recommends that the end of live sheep exports by sea from Australia be legislated during this term of the Australian Parliament Glyde P et al (2023) Independent Panel Report: Phase Out of Life Sheep Exports by Sea. Last night's fun discussion at the 3-hour news show SEAtoday with Maria Harfanti and Alia rahma . We were talking about wildlife are not pets . Of course, wildlife are not pets since they can harm people whenever got threatened. Not just to the owner, but also to people in the neighborhood surrounding. They can be a source of zoonotic disease transmission too. . Keeping wildlife as pet is against animal welfare, and definitely had 0 contribution to conservation. Their existence is valued along the habitat existence too, so keeping them in your house won't save them from extinction if their population in the wild is keep reducing. The fact that it's just gonna raised the economic motive for the illegal wildlife trade. . Social media content that displays wildlife as pets and animals as entertainers is already categorized as animal cruelty according to the social media animal cruelty coalition, no matter if it's ambiguous/obvious, or intentional/not. . Had a fun game too at the end of the segment, and this is a perfect time to celebrate Indonesia Forest Day too (7 August) yeaaay! . Look I looked tiny (short) in the last picture 😅 . #wildlifeconservation #wildlifemedicine #conservationmedicine #wildlifevets #veterinarian #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #vetnetworking #seatoday

We can only imagine the horrors animals are enduring inside the MV Bahijah. Thousands of cattle and sheep have been trapped inside this ship for a month, greeted by a sweltering heatwave in Fremantle where they have continued to languish for days after the vessel was sent into a conflict zone, predictably having to return to Australia. The cumulative stresses that these animals have endured means that any further voyage would be tantamount to sanctioned animal cruelty. And yet, this is the industry’s preferred option. With an end to live sheep export on the horizon after the Albanese government committed to bring it to an end... one would think that the industry would be on its best behaviour. Instead, it is trying to make the problem go away... quite literally. That the live export industry wants to now send these animals back out to sea to endure an even longer, more gruelling ordeal — only to finally be slaughtered if they survive long enough to reach their destination — yet again proves that this industry is incapable of upholding even the most basic animal welfare principles. Entrenched in live animal export is a culture of ruthlessness and extreme animal cruelty. They've been getting away with it for decades — and enough is enough. As time ticks slowly away for the sheep and cattle hidden within the MV Bahijah... the question remains, will the Federal regulator let exporters get away with it again? Stay tuned.

The EU is playing a leading role in the controversial live animal trade, according to a new report by the NGO Compassion in World Farming. The report reveals details of the journeys of more than 180,000 consignments of EU cattle, pigs, sheep and other species over a 19-month period between 2021 and 2023. NGOs and campaigners are calling for an overhaul of EU animal welfare legislation. Millions of animals have been trucked, shipped and flown on journeys of more than eight hours. This was not known because millions of exported animals are not recorded in TRACES, the European Commission’s online platform for certificates required for animal transport. Hauliers often bypass the 24-hour rest requirement during transport. The report also found that overcrowding, dehydration and exhaustion remain widespread in EU animal transport. 🗞️ Olivier Reinoud in today’s newsletter. https://buff.ly/3Rsa1Hl #EU #AnimalWelfare #EuropeanCorrespondent

Promoting Animal Welfare in the #GeneralElection is essential. However, #manifesto pledges must translate into immediate action. Too often, promises are abandoned or delayed, causing prolonged pain and suffering for animals. The UK has a proud history of advocating for animal welfare, but there is still much work to be done to ensure the humane treatment of animals. Key priorities in this area include: Stricter Regulations: Implementing and enforcing stricter animal welfare regulations to prevent cruelty and ensure the ethical treatment of animals in agriculture, research, and domestic environments. Banning Harmful Practices: Prohibiting practices that cause unnecessary suffering, such as certain types of intensive farming. Wildlife Conservation: Enhancing efforts to protect wildlife habitats and support conservation initiatives to preserve biodiversity. Public Awareness Campaigns: Promoting awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of animal welfare can lead to a more compassionate society. #generalelection #animalwelfare #wildlife #conservation https://lnkd.in/eDP8_vNi

https://lnkd.in/d6-c9pP2 The UK bans the export of live animals for slaughter and makes mandatory the use of CCTV cameras in national slaughterhouses in order to observe the status of animal welfare!! The ban is for live cattle, sheep and goats, pigs and horses and has just taken effect, on 20.05.2024. According to OEC, in 2022, the UK's export and import values of live animals were $913M and $713M, respectively. France, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and the UK are, in declining order, the top five animal exporters among the European nations.

As the General Election approaches on 4 July 2024, we want to ensure the protection and welfare of all animals is a high priority. 🐾 We fully appreciate the key campaigns our charity is leading in Northern Ireland will be decided by our own government. However, the decisions and the legislation passed (or not passed) in Westminster may influence legislation and policies set here. Therefore, we are asking the next Westminster Government to: 1. Develop stronger collaborations across the UK and Ireland alongside the introduction of robust legislation to bring the cruel illegal puppy and kitten trade and unscrupulous breeders to an end. 2. To introduce a full-scale review of the laws around dangerous dogs, protecting people from tragic dog attacks whilst preserving animal welfare. The review should also include developing partnerships across the devolved governments, with key stakeholders to ensure consistency and good practice is established. 3. Bring the badger cull in England to an end. Over the past ten years, 240,000 badgers have been culled in England and bovine TB persists. Culling badgers is expensive, ineffective and inhumane. 4. Strengthen the Hunting with Dogs legislation in England. Although legislation was introduced in 2004 banning this cruel act in England and Wales, it contains loopholes that allow hunting to continue chasing and killing defenceless wild animals. 5. Ensure the outworkings of the Windsor Framework and the Northern Ireland protocol offer the highest levels of protection to advance animal welfare. From 31 December 2025, the grace period for veterinary medicines will end. A long term solution is needed to ensure access to veterinary medicines is maintained. 6. To stand up to industries that are destroying nature for profit. A move to a more sustainable method of farming will protect our wildlife. Our rivers are full of sewage and chemicals and plastic pollution is everywhere. We need to rewild our countryside and prevent overfishing and industrial farming. Be sure to use your vote and voice to ask our local candidates how they will prioritise animal welfare at Westminster if elected. Together our voice is stronger so let's speak up for all animals. 🐾 Read via our website: https://buff.ly/3RMXP3N #AnimalWelfare #Policy #ProtectAllAnimals #EndAnimalCruelty #Share #UseYourVote

The announcement of the general election and the dissolution of Parliament means that many Bills will be stopped in their tracks. We were delighted to see today that there was still time for the Pet Abduction Bill to pass, which will make the theft of an animal a specific offence with stronger repercussions of up to five-year jail terms. However, it does mean many important animal welfare changes that the government had long promised will once again be delayed. 😞 This includes the Renters Reform Bill, which, among other benefits, would have made it easier for millions of people in rentals to add a furry friend to their home. It also means that once again, the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill has not made it through parliament. This Bill would have stopped British hunters from bringing "trophies" of over 7,000 endangered animal species, including lions, elephants, and rhinos, into the UK. In 2019, we were excited to see manifestos filled with so many animal welfare promises, so we are saddened that today we are in a position where so many of these commitments are unfulfilled. We are hopeful that the next government can bring through these changes (and even more!), but if not, we will continue to fight to create a better life for every animal! 🐾 #PetAbductionBill #RentersReformBill #HuntingTrophiesBill #AnimalWelfare #GeneralElection
