How deficient a world I was living in without stepping into this novel… Didn’t even know Susan Sontag, one of my idols, called it “one of the masterpieces of the 20th-century world literature.” (My reading literature has gotten definitely shallower since I decided not to pursue an academic career in 2007.) At least, it is somewhat consoling to remember the breathtaking shock I had on ‘that terrible night’ of mine when I read Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” in my gloomy room in my parents’ tiny apartment in Busan during my stormy high school days. Just because Gabriel García Márquez recalls his experience with “Metamorphosis” as part of ‘that terrible night’ of his, too. He compares that shock to what he experienced through “Pedro Páramo.” Now I want to see if “Pedro Páramo” could take me back to ‘that terrible night’ with fogs of uncertainty and anxiety of life that I have been unknowingly distanced from as part of adulthood—a rather stable and thoughtless state. Off to order 📕 to read it before its film adaptation’s global premiere on Netflix in 20 days!

Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in literature today. Kudos to Deborah Smith for contextual translation. Though I have been very skeptical about the Novel Prize in “literature” since high school, I have been secretly following the winners. Today definitely feels special to me just because I can feel the author’s sensibilities in the most intuitive manner—my mother tongue. I wholeheartedly support Deborah Smith’s approach to translation: “I would only permit myself an infidelity for the sake of a greater fidelity.” A timely read (“Han Kang and the Complexity of Translation,” Jiayang Fan, “The New Yorker,” Jan. 2018) 👉 https://lnkd.in/gNdA3g5J (In fact, I was so convinced of contextual approach to translation that I even founded a company who approaches translations as a process of re-creation that places Writers, not Translators, at the center of the translation process.
