"The Evolution of the Spindle: A Glimpse into HSTec's Early Work 28 Years Ago" Motorized spindles have become the industry standard for machine tools today. Main spindles used to be driven by belts or gears and the speed could only be varied by changing the transmission ratio or the number of driven poles. The need for higher-speed machining requirements led to the development of high-precision spindle bearings, power electronics, and frequency converters. Advancements in power electronics enabled the development of compact drives with low-cost maintenance using high-frequency three-phase asynchronous motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. This allowed for the development of motorized spindles suitable for a wide range of applications and machining requirements. Currently, the focus is on condition monitoring of the bearings, drive, and process stability. To improve machining quality, process reliability, material removal capabilities, and energy efficiency, spindles are now equipped with various sensors that enable data monitoring and analytics. This results in the identification of critical components and improved system performance. Consequently, machine maintenance can be strategically planned, minimizing unplanned downtime, and preventing catastrophic failures. It also helps to extend the lifespan of spindles, improve overall equipment effectiveness, and reduce maintenance costs. As a result, we now have a spindle that delivers competitive performance while reducing the total cost of ownership. Just take a look at HSTec’s early work, motor spindles, custom developed for one of our first customers back in 1996. In comparison to today's trends, HSTec is now focused on predictive maintenance prospects and developing a Smart Spindle for the future of AI in the industrial world.
