Maine Public hosted a great conversation about #SustainableFashion today. It's a hot time for this topic because of Congresswoman Pingree recently launched the Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus. The consensus seemed to be: Can we all please stop buying #FastFashion? Folks made great points about imported $4 fast-fashion shirts not including the externalities of unfair labor practices, destruction of natural resources, pollution and climate change. Sure, $4 ... but what's the real cost? It's a huge problem with complicated solutions, but re-use ✨must✨ be one of them. Goodwill helped Mainers reuse literally millions of pounds of textiles this year. As a nonprofit, the revenue we earn from those sweater and jeans funds our work. This week we announced a new program that upskills Mainers into renewable energy jobs (including engineering). Doesn't get much more sustainable than: textile circularity > workforce development > renewable energy + high wage jobs feeding back into the local economy. When I search for answers, composting seems to be the best option. (Goodwill accepts clothing in gently-used condition.) #Maine #SustainableFashion #TextileCircularity #Goodwill #MoreThanJustAStore

This is such a great reminder about sustainability, fast fashion almost feels like an addiction we need to break.
