This is a topic near and dear to my heart. I lost a dear friend to hypoglycemia and I talk about him whenever I teach about the topic. Thank you Diana Isaacs, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP, BC-ADM, CDCES for working on this with me. This paper is an in depth look at the consequences associated with hypoglycemia and the use of stable glucagon but also importantly novel approaches for making sure we get glucagon in the hands of all persons at risk. Are you prescribing glucagon for ALL your patients that receive insulin? Why not? Community pharmacists are in a unique position to be able to make sure all patients who are prescribed insulin receive a prescription for glucagon. We should be empowering them just as we did with Narcan to provide this life-saving drug to our patients. I’d like to call on all prescribers to support empowering pharmacists to do just that. In the meantime, if one of them calls you and suggest prescribing insulin to one of your patients receiving insulin, please authorize that prescription. It was an honor to coauthor this paper with Jennifer D Goldman, RPh, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP. Read her important note below about the importance of prescribing this life saving medication glucagon for all people taking insulin or at risk of hypoglycemia.
