Remember that freedom of being on summer break?! Isn't it ironic that now that we are grown-ups we theoretically are more “in charge” and yet have less freedom. Our days are full of lists, obligations. Work. Summer is the perfect time to remember that life is more than work! The longer days give us more opportunities for those things that bring joy and rest – and fun! Sure, you can do things before or after work (take an early morning run, hit a hiking trail after work, read outside, linger over the sunset). But you can give yourself some summer breaks at work too! You could... 🍧 bring a frozen treat to your morning stand-up 🚶♀️ have a walking meeting 🎡 take a field trip with your work team 🏓 play a game with your co-workers What will you do in your personal or work life to make the most of these summer days? THE NEXT SCANDINAVIAN FORMAT? Right now I am embracing our Scandinavian tradition of a collective summer break! What a genius concept! Everyone takes a 3-4 week summer break exactly at the same time and during the break we close down the entire office🤯 The origin of this tradition is our long, dark winters. The summer break is a vital chance for us to recharge in the warmth and sunshine. Scandinavia is known for its forward-thinking mindset, embracing change and supporting anything that can boost its people's well-being. It's more important than many realize, as it helps improve our mental and emotional well-being for the rest of the year. But the best thing about it is that we all log off together, giving each other a well-deserved rest without the constant flow of emails, calls, and meetings. The result is a calm and peaceful holiday for everyone, where we can truly relax and enjoy being with our families without disruptions. And it may come as a surprise that despite the long breaks, the Scandinavian countries are among the most productive in the world. No wonder that Finland, Norway, and Denmark top the list of countries with the greatest sense of life satisfaction. The concept of a long, simultaneous summer holiday should definitely be distributed as a format to other territories as well. I am absolutely convinced it would be a worldwide hit😉

Summertime has always been interesting to me in terms of work and creativity. I find that the breaks that come from the different cadence of our work—due to vacations (us or others), holiday weekends, kids at home (or at camp), travels, and general changes in 'vibes' among people—compound over time. It's not just my breaks but those of the people I work with and collaborate with. It's at this time that I most clearly witness the benefits of a culture of rest, refreshment, and the new perspectives that come from travel or time away from the computer for me and my team and collaborators. My question -- and I'd love your thoughts -- is that (if you see something similar or agree, or even disagree): is this effect more pronounced because of its seasonality (i.e., summer only), or is it something we can design into the rest of the year?
