More enhancements of listening via #AirpodPro -dynamic head tracking, voice isolation and personalised spatial audio on offer in #iOS18 While the rumours of an #AirPod pro 2 ‘hearing aid mode’ in iOS18 weren’t quite true, there is definitely an enhanced hearing mode. Great to see a consumer electronic company with trillions in cash and billions in users, taking a massive interest in hearing issues. What they launch event didn’t include was their massive ongoing study on #tinnitus Here’s the link to that and a glimpse in the future of Apple’s hearing world. https://lnkd.in/e472u7c6

Telecoils connect directly to sound systems in public spaces, offering access to clear, latency free audio. Google Maps now even helps locate venues with hearing loops. But there's still a lot of hearing aid users who aren't even aware of them:

I was thrilled to be in attendance at #CTS2024 made possible with the support of the Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee (DWCC), Broadcasting Accessibility Fund Inc. and the generous support of the Canadian Telecommunications Association for registration. Thank you everyone, however two things happened that made me ponder to think: 1) on the schedule was a panel of accessibility experts, and yet for this topic the room was one-thirds at capacity compared to the day before and the morning before. 2) why there was no Deaf with lived experience of telecommunication barriers on the said panel. 80% of telecom accessibility is based on the fact the world is audio-centric, and the industry has worked to ensure accessibility for Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing. IP Relay, Video Relay services, and there was no one to explain to these experiences. I sincerely hope the conference organizers will do better for collaborations with Deaf, Deaf-Blind and hard of hearing Canadian telecom customers. It was wonderful to see Stephanie Cadieux again in her role from the Office of the Chief Accessibility Officer/ Bureau de la dirigeante principale de l'accessibilité who did a top notch job of facilitating the panel. Let’s do it again next conference, this time with Deaf persons lived experience added to the panel.👏🏼 Looking forward to seeing more collaboration with Deaf people and telecoms. Edit based on discussion with another Deaf colleague: Perhaps we should join forces to request an Accessibility Standard for Telecommunications as after a review of the ICT standards by Accessibility Standards Canada as many aspects to do with Deaf accessibility were glaringly missing. #AccessibleCanada #telecom #accessibilitylens #Deaflens #CRTC

We’re very proud to be one of the first theatres in England to install Auracast, a groundbreaking Bluetooth technology that will transform accessibility for our audiences. Replacing our outdated 30 year old hearing loop, Auracast will provide high-quality, wireless audio to a wide range of hearing devices, including compatible hearing aids, cochlear implants, headphones and earbuds. It will ensure the theatre goer will be in control of their listening enjoyment of the actors or the musicians at a high-quality level over any unwanted background noises. It will be beneficial to many everyday theatre goers and those with hearing difficulties and for neurodivergent people. This week, we welcomed the Ewing Foundation for Deaf Children, GN Group and Ampetronic to install and demonstrate this cutting-edge system in our theatre space. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be training our team to ensure a seamless experience for all our visitors. At Contact, we believe in inclusion, access, and empowering our community, and we’re excited to lead the way in making theatre truly accessible for all! Tech firms such as Samsung Electronics and ReSound are future-proofing their devices for the wider rollout of Auracast, the low energy, assistive listening technology from Bluetooth SIG is projected to be a lot more commonplace by the end of the decade. The potential use cases for electronic devices - including hearing aids and headsets - in the coming years include: - Airport boarding information - Train journey updates - Entertainment venues such as cinemas and theatres Thomas Olsgaard of GN Group tells me more about the technology, after I tried it out for myself using the ReSound Nexia hearing aids. Have you heard of Auracast?

It’s #DeafAwarenessWeek and we’re highlighting the importance of accessibility in arts and culture. If we can expect live subtitles and captions on TV, in films, video games and on social media, then why not in theatres, museums and other arts and culture venues? Despite 12 million people in the UK (that’s 1 in 5 people) being deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, the number of captioned theatre shows or live subtitled events are limited. Stagetext aims to change this for the better, so everyone can benefit - not just those who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing - but also their friends, colleagues and family, as well as the theatres, production companies and museums. We are not alone in championing access to the arts – there’s lots of research that show that audiences would welcome subtitles and captions. For example, Indigo Ltd and Spektrix's report, Tomorrow’s Audience revealed that more than a third of under 35 new-to-arts audiences would welcome additions to the performance to improve inclusivity, especially captions. Furthermore, our own research has shown that almost a quarter (24%) of all respondents said they used captions or subtitles at live events and 54% of people use them to watch content on TV or online. Our research also highlighted that whatever the reason people were using captions and subtitles for, they made a difference to the experience. A huge 74% of people said that they made a positive difference, with 35% of those saying they made the experience ‘a lot better’. But it’s not just deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people that benefit from captions and subtitles – they can also help people who are neurodivergent and those for whom English is not their first language. So that’s why we’re using Deaf Awareness Week to highlight the importance of accessibility in arts and culture: https://lnkd.in/en-YNAb5 #DeafAwarenessWeek2024 #deafaccess #accessibility #artsandculture

It was a pleasure to present: AURACAST, Where are we now? Where will we go? The concept, the opportunities, the challenges, during the Arteveldehogeschool Focus Day Assistive Listening Devices in Ghent. Nikolai Bisgaard, Katya Freire, Roosje Clinckspoor, Marleen De Sloovere, Virginie Roeland, Hanssens Kristin, Melina Willems, Dominique Jaspers, Jan De Sutter, Shelly Chadha, Lidia Best , CPACC Our conclusions were: •Bluetooth technology started in 1989. •Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth LE Audio are not the same! •BT LE Audio has better sound quality at half the power •AURACAST is the Broadcast application to all compliant headphones, earbuds, hearing aids, … • AURACAST can be used for: •Silent Screens •Tour Systems / Public Announcements •Multi-language Support •Assistive Listening •The available AURACAST transmitters, compliant device, receivers, earbuds and even hearing aids are increasing rapidly •The IEC standard 60118-17 is in development •But we should not kill the telecoil, before the full roll-out (will take at least 8 years) •Audiologists need to select and fit hearing aids to avoid sound quality issues (open fitting)
