Excerpt: "According to Ookla’s global fixed broadband rankings for May, the U.S. came in sixth with a median download speed of 248.27 Mbps. So, who came ahead? Singapore claimed first with a fixed download speed of 289.98 Mbps, followed by Hong Kong (282.48 Mbps), Chile (274.46), United Arab Emirates (272.90) and Iceland (255.69). It’s important to keep in mind the challenges of deploying high-speed broadband across a large landmass like the U.S., said Mark Giles, lead industry analyst at Ookla."

UK Broadband Funding Boosts National Connectivity Reliable internet is more than just a convenience—it's a necessity. The UK government's latest investment in broadband infrastructure aims to bridge the connectivity gap, particularly in rural areas where poor quality internet has long been a barrier to productivity. This funding is not just about improving speeds; it's about unleashing the full potential of businesses across the country, ensuring they can operate efficiently and thrive in today's digital age. The £5 billion Project Gigabit scheme is a significant step towards future-ready innovation. This initiative has already successfully delivered broadband speeds of over 1Gbps to 85% of UK premises. With the Autumn 2024 Budget setting an ambitious target for nationwide gigabit and 5G availability by 2030, we're looking at a transformative shift. As highlighted by Kyle Hill, CTO at ANS, the UK has always been a hub of innovation, and this investment will solidify our position at the forefront of digital advancements. In an interconnected world, the role of AI cannot be understated. While not explicitly mentioned in the budget speech, there's a clear intent within the government's Modern Industrial Strategy to leverage advanced digital technologies. This strategy aims to develop the UK's digital infrastructure further, supporting key sectors and driving substantial benefits for the telecoms industry. #UKConnectivity #BroadbandFunding #DigitalInnovation

Over the past decade, U.S. broadband providers have invested a staggering $1.1 trillion in connectivity—five times the investment of the next-best OECD country, Japan. And in 2023 alone, U.S. ISPs spent $94.7 billion, outpacing the total 2010-2023 investments of seven OECD countries. This private investment powers high-quality, affordable broadband across a geographically diverse nation, yet recent FCC decisions threaten to slow this progress. Instead of treating broadband like a monopoly utility, let’s champion policies that sustain this innovation. Check out Joe Kane’s analysis of what these numbers mean for the future of connectivity and regulation. https://lnkd.in/eGf2PWTh

Businesses struggling with poor signal can greatly benefit from adopting fixed wireless access (FWA), according to the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA). Going wireless offers a faster and more cost-effective way to extend high-speed broadband connectivity, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. UKWISPA has urged the government to support the widespread use of FWA as part of its Project Gigabit initiative, highlighting its potential to deliver instantaneous connectivity. By enhancing connectivity options, FWA can play a crucial role in supporting businesses across the UK. It’s easy to take connectivity for granted when it’s at our fingertips—access to services, education, and opportunities. But for millions, the internet is still out of reach, and with it, access to essential digital public services like e-learning and healthcare. Initiatives like Giga are making a real difference, connecting schools and communities, and unlocking new possibilities. The real challenge now is ensuring that this transformation reaches everyone.
Global internet connectivity saw steady but uneven progress in 2024, according to the latest edition of “Measuring digital development: Facts and Figures 2024,” an annual compendium of the most important ICT indicators gathered by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN specialized agency for digital technology. While an estimated 32 per cent of the world’s population, or 2.6 billion people, are offline in 2024, down from an estimated 2.8 billion for 2023, stubborn digital divides persist and about one-third of the world’s people remain offline. For Giga, a partnership between ITU and UNICEF whose mission is to connect the world’s schools to the internet by 2030, “Facts and Figures 2024” presents data that points to the challenge of that mission and to valuable insights on the global progress towards digital inclusion.
