“There are estimated to be 35 Passivhaus schools currently underway or in the pipeline in Scotland. The international Passivhaus building standard offers exceptional energy efficiency, cutting a building’s heating energy use by up to 80%, compared to current building regulations, as well as delivering exemplary levels of interior comfort, wellbeing, and durability. Scottish Futures Trust funding This revolution in Scottish schools has come about thanks to an innovative funding mechanism from the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT). Projects receiving funding need to meet an ambitious energy target and funding may be reduced based on any performance gap post-completion. The Passivhaus standard effectively eliminates the performance gap, de-risking the securing of funding. It has been impressive how swiftly the industry, supply chain and clients have adjusted to delivering to the Passivhaus standard in the education sector. And perhaps these school projects can offer useful lessons to the wider Scottish construction industry.”

Last week, industry leaders gathered at the Commercial Observer Higher Education Forum to discuss the latest trends and challenges in higher education design and construction. A standout session, "Reimagining Spaces: Repurposing Buildings for Academic Excellence and Economic Growth," featured Jenny Freeman, LEED ® AP, Managing Director of Buildings at Group PMX, as a panelist. Jenny was joined by fellow industry experts Jerrod Delaine, CEO of The Delaine Companies representing Pratt Institute, and Justin Fallon Dollard, Executive Director of Planning and Design at the University of Rochester. Selected Works Before the year comes to an end, we would like to present another remarkable and award-winning master's thesis by a UdK graduate in our ‘Selected works’ series: Transformative Refurbishment Strategies for Typical Berlin School Buildings by Emil Brechemacher. Between 1972 and 1978, 15 standardised primary schools were built in West Berlin according to the plans of ARGE Grundschulstandardisierung. After almost 50 years of use, the first districts are planning to demolish the schools, while at the same time there are renewed political calls to intensify the standardisation and modularisation of school construction. In his work, Emil poses the question of the potential of refurbishing this school types of the past instead of continuing the concept of short-lived fast-build schools. https://lnkd.in/dYQEsx4F

Last week Richard Collins and Ang Sheppard attended the groundbreaking of Ysgol Cynefin in Llanrumney, Cardiff.  The new school will be built on two separate sites, each accommodating 36 key stage two pupils, addressing the growing demand for educational spaces in Cardiff. The brand-new schools have been meticulously designed to foster an optimal learning environment, including ideal special adjacencies, secure connections, and essential requirements. Formerly the Court School the new name 'Ysgol Cynefin' translates to habitat school, chosen by the school and key stakeholders to encompass the relationship between people and the natural world, and how connecting people to surroundings can shape a sense of identity and wellbeing. The new school will seek to support pupils who face challenges in terms of emotional health and wellbeing. It heralds a radical transformation of additional learning needs provision in Cardiff. Gareth Woodfin, Cardiff Studio Director said “It has been a great privilege for HLM Architects to be part of the collaborative team in delivering this much needed new facility for Cardiff. Our local team have acquired a huge amount of experience and expertise in designing and delivering specialist educational environments over the last 15 years and we very much look forward to handing over the schools next year; which will vastly improve the wellbeing of the pupils, staff and the wider communities”.
