Startup Investor & Cofounder at SingleSprout | 1,000's of Hires at Startups and Legal Teams | Follow for Insights
A successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur shared their playbook for hiring an early-stage VP of Engineering with me yesterday: 1. Identify failed founders who reached a certain level of success. * How do you identify these founders? Ask VCs who invested in those founders. Ask other functional leaders which failed companies they admire. 2. Seek candidates who can handle complexity (architecture, large-scale systems, etc.), recruit, and build out the layer below them. 3. Avoid *most* candidates from larger companies. 4. Find someone more focused on equity and the company's long-term success, but pay them fairly! 5. Consider candidates who have done a piece of the whole thing and are now looking to take on a more comprehensive role. 6. The candidate must be able to work directly with the CEO. 7. The role is more of a VP level, but with CTO-like responsibilities, as the company may still be too early for a full-fledged CTO. Good advice, but remember, real innovation in hiring isn't just about checking boxes for skills or past success. It's about discovering those who think differently than you and can complement your vision to drive your company forward.

Senior SC @ Homerun Presales ⚾️ | Building the future of Sales Engineering 🚀 | Diary of Sales Engineer 🦆 | Career Advisor for Presales Academy
Sales Engineering Career Path 🚀 As Sales Engineers, our role's dynamic nature opens doors to a wide array of career opportunities. We're not just technical experts; we're at the intersection of multiple business areas, gaining diverse skills that pave various career paths. Interested in the strategic elements of sales? Aim for roles like VP of Sales or even CRO. If it's the technology that sparks your passion, the path could lead you to becoming a CTO. For those captivated by product innovation and market needs, heading toward a Chief Product Officer (CPO) role could be your calling. If branding and messaging resonate with you, consider aiming for a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) position. And for those who thrive in leadership, envisioning the bigger picture, the ultimate goal could be CEO. But if you prefer to excel as a top-tier individual contributor, positions like Principal SE or Field CTO might be right for you. And remember, many founders started as the first SEs of their companies, combining all these skills to launch successful ventures. As a Sales Engineer, your career path is yours to shape. With exposure to so many facets of a business, you have the unique flexibility to specialize in what truly interests you. The real challenge isn’t just determining where you can go, but deciding where you want to make an impact. #ducklife #salesengineering #presales #career

While looking for a job, don't just restrict yourself for the "designation" you are looking for. Here's what you should do... Similar roles are available with varied designations. Broaden your job search so that you dont miss out on some opportunities just because you didnt include it in your search criteria. Product Manager, Senior Product Manager, Principal, Director is a typical PM hierarchy. But it varies company to company. - Some companies may skip the 'Principal' and hire you as a 'Director' - Some companies may have a Senior Principal. - Inbound and Outbound are other designations to search for. Did you know, some businesses in Microsoft offer Product management responsibilities with the title of a "Program Manager". So, expand your search with different titles and you may find something exciting. Good luck. #jobsearch #resumereview #linkedin #linkedinjobs

Curiosity Fuels Action!! And I'm curious about something... Someone is looking to return to corporate after some time away. They are selective in who they will talk to, and are very upfront about their experiences, life, passions and know what and how they want to contribute when they are hired... You're the hiring manager... What time spent is more important to you & in the hiring process❓❓ ⏩ 25 years in technology and 30 years in corporate ⏩ 3.5 years out of technology and out of corporate Asking for a friend 😉 Picture of curious kids because as adults, we all need more childlike wonder in our days...in fact, our #MentalHealth depends on it! #management #HumanResources #hiring #technology #curiosity

Product Managers from leading tech companies are often treated the same way people have historically treated Ivy League grads. The difference is that companies have seemed to learn that just because you received an Ivy League education doesn't mean you know how to use it - however, the same companies will hire (ex-whatever) without question. It's this kind of bias that leads to a lack of innovation and meaningful product work. Give me the person who has the ability to create from nothing, over the person who piggybacks off of previous success any day.
