Although municipal governments have taken tangible actions to respond to the needs of Indigenous, Black and equity-deserving people, it is critically important that we focus on ways to systemically create the foundations for improved services that respond to the everchanging needs of residents and advance human rights and reconciliation. Join the City of Toronto to learn how their Equity and Human Rights team is working to build organizational capacities to create an inclusive workforce, collect and utilize high-quality sociodemographic data, respond to complex human rights challenges, and embed equity and accountability measures City-wide. By intentionally and collaboratively constructing a solid equity and reconciliation organizational infrastructure, municipalities can drive positive outcomes for all communities. Transportation Intern II at AtkinsRéalis | Graduate Student-Athlete, Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant at Georgia Institute of Technology | Division I Track and Field Athlete
Reflecting on Juneteenth: Charting a Path Toward Inclusive Transportation On this significant day of Juneteenth, I had the honor of presenting at AtkinsRéalis a roadmap to inclusive transportation infrastructure. My presentation began with a historical context, touching upon pivotal moments like Plessy vs. Ferguson and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. These events not only shaped our nation’s history but also laid the groundwork for today’s conversation on equity and access. As we delved into the challenges faced by minority groups, it became clear that access, safety, and sustainability are areas where the black community, in particular, faces significant hurdles. Through personal anecdotes and a review of systemic issues, I offered recommendations aimed at steering us toward a more equitable future for all. Highlighting the transformative power of transportation, I shared inspiring examples of Lid projects that span over highways. These innovative structures are not just about creating green spaces; they serve as vital links that stitch together communities once divided by vast roadways. By reclaiming land above these traffic corridors, Lids offer a breath of fresh air and a place for people to connect, play, and engage with one another. They stand as a testament to how we can reimagine infrastructure to heal the scars of past divisions and pave the way for a united community fabric. As we commemorate Juneteenth and look to the future, let’s draw inspiration from these Lids—symbols of resilience and unity—and continue to build inclusive pathways that honor our shared humanity and collective right to equitable spaces. My presentation included information from: • New Routes to Equity: The Future of Transportation in the Black Community by Regan F. Patterson, Ph.D. Transportation Equity Research Fellow • How Interstate Highways Gutted Communities—and Reinforced Segregation by Farrell Evans #InclusiveInfrastructure #Juneteenth #EquityInTransport #GreenSpaces #CommunityReconnect

Throughout South Carolina, we’ve been building upon a track record of economic development success for several decades. While that momentum has continued to push us onward and upward, the South Carolina Department of Commerce recognizes that no one — no company, nor industry — is immune from the technological advancements happening throughout all business sectors. With a nod to our heritage, an eye toward the future and a spirit of embracing innovation, S.C. Commerce today unveiled our new agency brand and tagline, Launch to Legacy. Ultimately, we want businesses to know that Launch to Legacy reinforces the fact that you can start, thrive, expand and build a legacy right here — and S.C. Commerce will be there to support you, every step of the way. The rebranding process has taken over a year and involved many of our key partners and stakeholders to ensure representation across as many industry verticals as possible. It’s been a thoughtful and deliberate process, uncovering and focusing on some of South Carolina’s greatest attributes. We’re proud of the result, and we’re excited for what the future of economic development holds throughout our state! BSR offices in the U.S. will be closed today in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America, as Union soldiers marched on Galveston, Texas in 1865. 159 years later, we acknowledge the continued impact of racialized systemic oppression on Black communities throughout the United States and beyond. Whether your company chooses to recognize or observe this holiday, there is an opportunity to approach its commemoration in a way that advances DEI and social justice efforts within your organization. For BSR members, several resources developed by our Equity, Inclusion & Justice (EIJ) team are available in the member portal to help you get started, such as: Allies+: Ally, Advocate, and Accomplice: https://lnkd.in/gZnn_95H; and Inclusive Leadership: https://lnkd.in/gXmT9wrm. This blog post truly reflects our profound learning experience in Montgomery, Alabama. It truly reflected our mission of “Leadership for Just and Humane Schools” at the National Superintendents Roundtable. What a power symposium!
🚨 New Blog Post! 🚨 Reflections from Montgomery, A Superintendent’s Notes I recently had the powerful opportunity to visit Montgomery, Alabama, with fellow superintendents. This experience was not just about learning history—it was about confronting the unfinished legacies of slavery, segregation, and systemic injustice that still shape our nation today. From the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, this journey challenged my understanding of America’s past and my role as an educator in shaping its future. Now that I know—what will I do? More importantly, now that “we” know—what will “we” do?
