As yet there is still no known vaccine for HIV and AIDS that can be used to stem the flow of this deadly infection. To raise awareness of the continued need for a vaccine, may 18 is the day set aside every year that is known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, or World Aids Day. Along with raising awareness of the need for a vaccine, it also celebrates those that work towards this goal. Kenya's population of women aged 15 years and above faces a significant risk of developing cervical cancer. Each year, 5,236 women are diagnosed with the disease, and 3,211 die from it. As the second most common cancer among women in Kenya, cervical cancer remains a major health concern. While opportunities for detection and treatment of this HPV-linked cancer are increasing, efforts to expand vaccination, which can prevent many cases, remain insufficient. Strengthening HPV vaccination programs is crucial to reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality in Kenya. CMMB Kenya, in partnership with the ministry of health and the ministry of education, conducted awareness campaigns on HPV vaccination through Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in schools, radio stations, and religious institutions. Vaccination outreaches conducted in schools target girls aged between 10 and 14 years. #HPVvaccination #healthierlivesworldwide

As the CITF mandate comes to an end on March 31, 2024, this is our final issue of Spotlight on CITF-funded Research. In it, we discuss results from several CITF-funded studies including one published in Scientific Reports, which found that the ICD-10 diagnostic code U07.1 identified most lab-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in hospital-admitted patients but missed a significant number of cases among those who had been discharged. We discuss a study, published as a pre-print and not yet peer-reviewed, which found that individuals living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy mount strong T cell responses to COVID-19 vaccines. You can also read a report from the CANCOVID-Preg project which shows that maternal and infant outcomes improved with the rise of less severe SARS-CoV-2 strains and the availability of multiple COVID-19 vaccine doses. While the CITF is wrapping up its operations, take note that the CITF Databank will continue to be available to researchers interested in accessing SARS-CoV-2 data, free of cost, for their own research.
