Underground Mining Glossary 1. Portal (Mine Entrance): The opening used to access the mine from the surface. 2. Decline: A horizontal passageway used to access underground mineral layers. 3. Incline: A passageway that slopes at a certain angle to access deeper layers in the mine. 4. Cross cut: Passages branching off main mining tunnels to reach specific areas within the mine. 5. Access: The route or means used to enter the mine. 6. Vent rise: A passage used to circulate air within the mine for ventilation of deep areas. 7. Ore drive: The passage used for extracting ore from deep layers in the mine. 8. Stope: An open space within the mine where ore is extracted. 9. Drift: A horizontal passage dug to reach specific areas within the mine. 10. Shaft: A vertical hole dug deep into the ground to access mineral layers. 11. Raise: A vertical passage dug from bottom to top within the mine. 12. Pillar: A piece of rock or ore left within the mine to support the roof and maintain stability. 13. Backfill: Filling empty spaces within the mine with materials like gravel or sand to support structures and enhance stability. 14. Ramp: A gradually sloping passage used to access various levels within the mine. 15. Gob: The waste rocks or unwanted materials accumulated during mining operations and removed from the mine. RQD: a key factor in mining Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is a measure of quality of rock core taken from a borehole. RQD signifies the degree of jointing or fracture in a rock mass measured in percentage. It is commonly used in rock mass classification which is fundamental in tunnelling, dam construction, mine and slope design. The RQD is given by the following formula: RQD = (SUM (length of sound pieces >100mm)/Total core run length) x 100 The quality of the rock mass and the extent of fragmentation are measured objectively and quantitatively by the RQD index. What are your thoughts about the rock mass classification based RQD ? Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eH8mGfqJ
