As I travel back from Vienna after a fantastic World Passenger Festival conference, I’ve been reflecting on this eventful month of June, which was rich with events, meetings, and conferences. There were numerous discussions and exchanges about innovation, change, customer experience, transformation, and the challenges and opportunities that come with them, but one of the quotes that I heard repeatedly and that resonated with me was: “New tech is changing the game.” However, I believe this can be further expanded: “New tech and an open mindset are changing the game.” Truly embracing and leveraging innovative technology requires significant change management and an adaptive mindset. This principle applies not just to the travel sector but across all industries. I had the great pleasure of attending this week's CEO4Climate event organized by swisscleantech at the Google premises in Zurich. The event focused on the question around "net zero as driver for innovation? Opportunities and limits". It was a truly inspiring event with thought-provoking insights from leaders like Urs Hölzle, Elena Walder-Schiavone, Rene Estermann, Urs Lehner, and the 50 attending CEOs. Here are some key takeaways and learnings for me from the event:   💡We often tend to find five reasons why things won't work. I appreciated Urs Hölzle's fresh perspective on sustainability and how to see the real opportunities in it. He emphasized the importance of the right mindset and highlighted differences between the US and Europe.   💡The IT sector is poised to be one of the first to achieve net-zero emissions. Despite the explosion in data consumption and computing power, data centers have become significantly more energy-efficient compared to 20 years ago.   💡Sometimes, we are biased in our approach to optimization. While we can continue to optimize the energy consumption of large infrastructures like Cloud data centers, imagine the potential in reducing the power consumption of the more than 5 billion chargers for mobile phones or notebooks, including the charging software behind. Opportunities for improvement can be found throughout your organization!   💡An area that remains relatively unexplored is optimizing algorithms for energy consumption. With the growing demand in the #AI space, the energy cost of transaction will increase, making energy-efficient algorithms and software optimization a potential hot topic in the future.   💡Many people in organizations are eager to contribute to sustainability efforts and projects. Managing these contributions can be challenging, and sometimes, driving sustainability forward requires the ability to say "No" and focus on getting things done. Sometimes less is more.   💡Most consumers will not be willing to pay a price premium beyond a certain level for more eco-friendly products. Companies should instead focus on increasing the value of sustainable products and/or finding more cost efficient production methods to bring down costs. While it may seem that societal, governmental, and corporate momentum for sustainability has waned due to geopolitical or economic reasons, it's crucial to continue pushing for transformation towards sustainability.
