"The History and Future of America's Public Land" Looking forward to this presentation by The Western Wildlife Conservancy on October 15, 2024 "... Many Americans use public lands for recreation and business but don’t understand how those lands came to be in the public domain. Join Walt Dabney, former National Park Service Superintendent and Texas State Park Director, to learn about: * The origin story of public lands; * The US Constitution and public lands; * Statehood acts/state constitutions and public lands; * How public lands became privately owned; * Why most public lands are in the West; * The creation of the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and the Bureau of Land Management; * The economic value of public lands; * Efforts to transfer public lands from public ownership." Reflected on the difference between conservation and natural resource management in this one!
"Reflecting on his year, Justin has enjoyed blending his skills in communications with his passion for conservation. He notes that he has enjoyed sharing his experiences with his fellow I.P. members who all seem to be, 'charting their own paths together'." ✍️ Jesse Wolk, Utility Mapping Specialist Individual Placement / AmeriCorps Member placed at Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Trails https://lnkd.in/gUT4hWXp [Image Description] A person hugging a tree in a forest. The last piece of the puzzle! Here, you can see Manomet’s Shorebird team, with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and Mississippi State University, setting up for the evening’s attempt to band young Whimbrels on Cape Cod. The team is working on filling in the last piece of this species’ migration puzzle: understanding how and where juvenile birds make it through the early years of life. Once the puzzle is complete, we can understand where and when conservation actions are needed to improve the life-supporting conditions on the ground for this and all shorebirds. How will this work? We are deploying small solar-powered transmitters in Massachusetts on young Whimbrel migrating for the first time. These transmitters will not only tell us the location of the birds while they move around Cape Cod, but also everywhere the birds go in the following months and years. Each young Whimbrel will leave the Cape toward the end of September and fly non-stop out over the Atlantic for about four days, a flight totaling over 2,500 miles over open water before they arrive in South America. The young birds will spend two to three years on their tropical non-breeding grounds before returning north as adults to nest on the Arctic tundra for the first time. You can support this project and other Manomet programs here 👇 Your gift is DOUBLED through 9/30 https://lnkd.in/d75TWPzS

Squirrels 🐿️ are incredibly important in shaping forest ecosystems and regeneration through their caching behavior, which helps spread tree species and promotes diversity. In fact, a study from the University of Richmond found that squirrels forget up to 74% of their hidden caches, which enables new trees to grow. 🌳🌳 So, let's recognize the impact of these small but mighty creatures! 🐿️ 😊 #WildlifeManagement #EnvironmentalConservation #Sustainability #EcosystemHeroes #SquirrelAppreciation
This week is the 6th annual Great Scottish Squirrel Survey and we’re asking everybody to get outside and explore nature, keep a close eye out, and submit all sightings of grey and red squirrels on our website. This will help us create a week-long snapshot of squirrel distributions across the country, vital for the red squirrel conservation our staff carry out on the ground. Last year over 1300 people reported almost 2000 squirrel sightings in just one week. Let’s make this years’ survey even greater. Thank you! 💚

I’m excited to share a new issue brief: “New Public Lands Actions Turn the Page on Decades of Conflict and Mismanagement.” The short report outlines how a suite of complementary new actions from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) work together to ensure conservation, energy development, and outdoor recreation go hand in hand on U.S. public lands. Under the leadership of President Biden, Secretary Haaland, Director Tracy Stone-Manning, and Deputy Director Nada Wolff Culver, the BLM is taking major steps right now to turn the corner on a long history of conflict and mismanagement of nearly 250 million acres of America’s public lands. While some measures have garnered attention, their actual collective impact is underappreciated. But by crafting these policies together, the Biden administration is weaving together something much greater than the sum of its parts.

Spring brings changes above our heads and under our feet—like in vernal pools. 🐍 Vernal pools are temporary wetland habitats critical to the survival of several species. In Maryland, vernal pools typically form when fall rains begin in September. These pools eventually dry up and disappear in late summer, but they teem with life during the rest of the year, particularly in early spring. More than 700 species in the northeastern United States—including this spotted salamander—rely on these temporary habitats. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3OXpQEd

Conversations about wildfire and forest management are not new topics - nor are they new to the media. If you like history and you’re passionate about wildfire and forest management, check out this article from 1924 (yes, you read that correctly - 100 years ago!) detailing the ongoing (then and still!) discussion about how best to manage our forests. #Vintage #History
For those folks interested in wildfire and forest management history in California, this article was published in the Plumas Independent (Quincy, CA) on Thursday, September 18th, 1924. It includes some insights on USFS Fire Management Policy at the time-take a minute to read especially last few sentences....thank you Plumas County Museum for finding, copying, and sharing this article during our visit!!
