Here’s an unexpected fact: Educational Alliance manages a bee hive.     And here’s an unexpected reason: to change lives.    At Educational Alliance, we run afterschool and summer programs for over 800 children in lower Manhattan.   These students attend public schools that often lack ample resources for enrichment. Additionally, many of the children are dealing with tough situations at home: some live in shelters, others are undocumented, and quite a few need more educational support than their schools can provide.     The bee hive that our students maintain is just one example of how we expose them to experiences that are unusual, intriguing, and educational. There’s a long list of what else they experience in our programs: trips to colleges, tutoring, homework help, visits to museums, music instruction, hands-on science, and much more.    The history of the Lower East Side is filled with stories of immigrants who came to this country and a spark was ignited that allowed them to flourish and to excel. They became entrepreneurs, scientists, and civic leaders.   Educational Alliance was at the center of many of those stories. We’re still here doing that same work throughout lower Manhattan, helping kids to discover all the potential that lies within themselves.     A few weeks ago, Educational Alliance learned that we had been awarded a five-year grant from New York State to make our afterschool programs even stronger and more enriching. We are rooted in creating equitable pathways to connect the classroom and workforce. One of our first initiatives was creating an online (asynchronous) dual enrollment program. This program was created to help support school districts address two problems: teacher shortage and language written into a recent bill passed by PA legislation in calculating ADM for College in the High School - Dual Enrollment. Mississippi’s journey to exceptional early literacy growth is well known. As states grapple with student achievement, engagement, and wellbeing an interview with Carey Wright reminded me that the impact wasn’t just about specific strategies, but in how well the strategies were implemented together. They had statewide coherence, sustained focus, continuous improvement, and a strong belief in every student. This is all highlighted in American Enterprise Institute's The Report Card with Nat Malkus podcast featuring Carey Wright, the State Superintendent of Maryland and former State Superintendent of Mississippi, discussing the "Mississippi Miracle" (or as state leaders would call it, hard work).  Key elements that stood out: 🔹Seeing every student and believing in every student! 🔹A relentless commitment to data-driven accountability: Focused on growth, especially for the bottom 25% of students at every school, with celebrations of progress and a clear return on legislative funding. Ensured the accountability system aligned with the results they wanted to see. (If scores are declining and no one is paying attention, the accountability model is out of alignment.) 🔹A deep focus on action-oriented and high-quality teacher professional development. ***Engaged over 400 teachers in an advisory committee whose feedback directly shaped ongoing teacher PD and support.*** 🔹Unified state leadership: Success was fueled by leadership in the Department of Education with strong backing from the Governor, the Legislature, and State Board of Education.  Local leaders were also pivotal. 🔹Family Engagement: Engaged families and provided family-focused instructional resources in both English and Spanish. 🔹Research Partnerships: Collaborations with research institutions helped refine and improve instructional practices being implemented. 🔹3rd grade retention policy with guardrails: Guardrails emphasized guidance, prevention, and intervention. A recent Boston University study found that students retained in 3rd grade saw significantly higher ELA scores by 6th grade, with notable benefits for Black and Hispanic/Latinx students. Mississippi also achieved impressive gains in NAEP math scores, demonstrating the transferability of their literacy-focused strategies and a parallel investment in math education. This is an excellent piece, and fits right along with what I just posted about the Snedden/Dewey divide. This part is especially haunting: "This May marks the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling that school segregation is unconstitutional. De facto school segregation has nonetheless persisted, with the Economic Policy Institute reporting in 2020 that Black students are more than twice as likely to attend high-poverty schools as their white peers and that 60% of Black students are concentrated in high-poverty schools predominantly serving children of color. Many of these students are relegated to deeply underfunded “apartheid schools,” attended almost exclusively by low-income students of color. Battling the consequences of state fiscal abandonment like dilapidated school buildings, unsafe drinking water, and a revolving door of underprepared teachers, these schools have to work twice as hard to provide students with a quality educational experience—one that is rich in critical thinking, collaborative project-based learning, and opportunities for autonomously student-driven work. This “deeper learning” historically reserved for “elite” students is now in demand across the knowledge-intensive job market and postsecondary educational spaces awaiting students upon graduation. High-poverty schools with elevated teacher attrition struggle to provide these crucial skills, leaving graduates scrambling to catch up to compete with their peers. This failure is both a national problem and a signal that our civil rights work is not yet done." #education #equity #cathedralthinking 

1. Point blank, they need to pay teachers fairly. I have seen many district level positions at APS that pay far above what teachers make. These aren't high level positions, but mainly tech and certification review positions, but teachers on the front lines get paid less. Why can't all the positions be paid fairly? 2. This seems impossible here in GA but we need to unionize. This state is very anti-union, but we know why. 3.GA PSC has ridiculous rules about what degree and what school counts toward certification. There are a very small list of schools that they will accept higher degrees from. I could be getting paid $10K more but because my degree isn't on their tiny list of schools, I cannot. 4. APS is so focused on testing without really investing and focusing on programs and strategies that work. The students barely ear breakfast, buses arrive late, 15 minutes for recess, yet you expect them to test several times a year, for hours on end? 5. Systemic change must happen. Gardening class, meditation, woodworking, community organization class, food chemistry, barbering & braiding/beauty classes. The curriculum is boring and outdated and one dimensional. I know there are a few schools like this, but not nearly enough.

How we'll get to integration and education equity: We've worked with fellow education justice advocates to craft a thoughtful strategy for ushering in an era where every student has a fair and equal shot at quality education. Our approach combines state policy changes, comprehensive research, and proactive advocacy. Why does this matter? History shows us that these tools are incredibly effective. For instance, 12 years of court-ordered desegregation dramatically narrowed the Black/white education gap - until the late 80s when rapid desegregation followed the court's loosened oversight. Transforming our schools into reflections of the diversity of our country is necessary for a healthy democracy. We are fighting for schools that are not only diverse but also rich in resources and opportunities, where every student can thrive.
