Attention all students considering a Ph.D.! As you may know, there are 3 major hurdles to jump over: the application, the dissertation defense, and the qualifying (or comprehensive) exam. While most are familiar with the first and third, the "quals" exam can be a bit of a mystery. Luckily, Sabrina Daglish has written a fantastic blog article for BioNavigators to help students decode this weird part of the Ph.D. process. Check out her article at https://lnkd.in/eNR7uv-j and gain a better understanding of what to expect during your Ph.D. journey. #PhD #QualifyingExams #graduateschool Colleagues: please repost and share with anyone you think could benefit!

Video annotations in Hypothesis - game changer! Thanks, Christie DeCarolis, MSIT, for your support! I frequently show videos in class to illustrate a concept in biology, and when I ask students if they have questions, I get few responses. Now, I have the students annotate the video transcript before class, replay the video during class, and discuss the student annotations. This has allowed ALL students to contribute to the discussion and has provided me with insight into student misconceptions, prior knowledge, and difficult concepts. #annotation #studentsuccess #highered

Do you think being 'award-winning' could be helpful to your career?* (*thanks to yesterday's action learning set for the idea for this post - you guys are great 😄) Entering competitions and awards can be a great way to demonstrate your experience in a certain area, plus it's a great way to start conversation with new people about what you do and what you are passionate about. Here's one such example of a writing competition for fertility researchers from the Progress Educational Trust. The Marcus Pembrey BioNews Writing Competition 2024 | PET (progress.org.uk)
