Reading recommendation for the weekend: “Lord of the Flies”. A fascinating story that can inspire our teams and organizations. In this book, written in 1954, Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding describes the adventures of a group of boys stranded on a deserted island and their attempt to create a system of management that would allow them to survive and eventually be rescued. Leadership, common goals, collaboration, teamwork, common sense, and how the lack thereof can lead to drastically negative consequences are some of the ideas in the book that resonate with the reality of our governments, companies, and teams. I was delighted to have this important conversation with Stephen M. R. Covey where we both keynoted the Northview Church LEADS Conference that was all about COURAGEOUS leadership. This concept is something I believe so deeply. If you want people to trust you, you’ve got to trust them. Stephen shares, “If the outcome you want is trust, a high trust team, high trust culture, yes, we have to be trustworthy. We earn that. But we also have to be trusting. It's the combination of being both trustworthy and trusting. It creates trust. I find bigger gaps and creating trust in teams and organizations is less that people aren't trustworthy. Although, sometimes, that's the case. And it's more often that we're not trusting." Leaders go first. One of the items I mention when joining with a new team is the importance to establish trust from the beginning. I trust that others understand their level of accountability in what they contribute as a resource to the team goals. I’ve been revisiting team and leadership theory during my professional transition and Jim Collins is who I find myself reaching for. If you’ve never read this book- I highly recommend giving it a look. In chapter 3, Jim Collins discusses his “bus” theory and ends the first page of that chapter with this thought: “First who, then what.” A great reminder as we round out Q1—people come first. #leadershiptheory #teamwork #peoplefirst
