WE SHOULD ALL HAVE A PERSONAL BOARD OF ADVISORS 📝 Similar to a company's board of directors/ trustees, a Personal Board of Advisors is having a team of trusted individuals to guide you through life and work. They help you set and achieve your goals by offering ideas and supporting you. They keep you accountable with regular check-ins and feedback. By choosing advisors for your life, you are at an advantage for better problem-solving outcomes. They also provide guidance, support your personal growth by suggesting new challenges, and helping you manage your crises with calm advice. To build your board, identify areas where you need help and seek knowledgeable individuals, maintaining regular communication for continuous support. This team can be crucial to your personal and professional success. Everyone should have A PERSONAL BOARD OF ADVISORS. You are not meant to go through life alone! #PersonalDevelopment #personalgrowth

Several keepable quotes in this article regarding the basics--being there as a board member physically, mentally and emotionally, and discussing a topic or subject in a respectful manner rather than attacking the person who broaches the topic. Are you evaluating the process by which your fraternal board recruits and educates new board members? Assumptions are not the answer.

I recently read Daniel Pink’s excellent book Drive – The surprising truth about what motivates us where Pink extends on research dubbed ‘The Sawyer Effect’. In Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom faces the dreary task of whitewashing his Aunt’s fence. Bored with the thought of ‘work’, he promotes the opportunity as ‘play’ to his friends managing to enlist a willing workforce to replace him. The key motivational principle that Twain highlights here is that work is behavior we are obliged to do, whereas play is behavior one chooses to do. The Sawyer Effect relates to research conducted with reference to the drivers of motivation around work and play. Researchers experimented with children whereby they divided them into three groups. The first group was the ‘expected award’ group where children were told they’d receive a certificate and ribbon if they drew a picture. The second group was the ‘unexpected award’ group where children were simply asked if they wanted to draw (without the promise of awards). At the end of the session, the researchers then handed each child that drew a certificate. The third group was the ‘no award’ group. Children were invited to draw but no promise of award was made, nor certificates handed out at the conclusion. Two weeks later the teachers set up paper and markers for the children during a free-play period and invited them to draw. What happened next is fascinating. Children who were in the second group of ‘unexpected award’ and third group of ‘no award’ drew just as much as they had previously. However, the children in the first ‘expected award’ group showed much less interest and spent little time drawing. Researchers concluded that The Sawyer Effect had taken hold. They wouldn’t even play without a reward. This isn't a new concept but one that is critical for young professionals or really anyone looking to grow: build your very own Board of Directors (BoD).    A BoD can include:  ✔ In your career -- Colleagues who can help tackle work-related challenges with you   ✔ In your life outside of work -- Subject matter experts who can give valuable input on milestones or obstacles in your journey, whatever that is! ✔ Anyone you trust to give you advice   You don’t have to make decisions alone. Empower yourself by accessing others’ strengths. I feel incredibly lucky to have accomplished, empathetic, smart and experienced people around me to tap for counsel. I recently began to build out my BoD including: people who are parents AND Senior Communicators, Attorneys, Teachers, Community Builders, Career Coaches, Entrepreneurs and more. We bounce ideas off one another, reach out for advice, and check each other. But whatever you do… take my BoD member and U of Penn MS, Organizational Dynamics Candidate, Jennie Udell's advice: "The trick is to include people in your BoD who you can respectfully disagree with. An echo chamber is not the goal here. You want to curate a variety of perspectives that challenge your ‘usual’ way of thinking."
