The City of Avondale, AZ Parks & Recreation Department recently celebrated the grand opening of the new Sand Volleyball Complex at the BLVD. Civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the complex were provided by Gavan & Barker, now Huitt-Zollars, and included design and construction observation. Adjacent to the Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, this volleyball complex features five competition-grade sand volleyball courts with perimeter fencing for tournament events and security. Spectator seating and shade structures provide an immersive viewing experience while drinking fountains and an automatic water system ensure hydration for spectators and players during matches. The complex includes lighting for night play and security cameras for enhanced safety and surveillance, as well as landscape improvements to beautify the surroundings. Located 35 meters above the ground, made of clear acrylic, the pool has side walls 180mm thick and 3.2 meters deep, while the base is 360mm thick. The entire structure weighs 50 tons and holds a total of 150 tons of water, of which 100 tons are supported by the acrylic "bridge". Given its size, the pool was built in separate sections, with transparent joints designed to optimize adhesion and reduce stress in the most delicate areas.
