My Pre-Office Jobs: A Walking-Around-Money Resume From age 13 into my early twenties, I worked a variety of jobs for pocket money. Maybe you did too? • Paper Boy (Contra Costa Times) Had to keep account books and collect payments. Still amazes me that newspapers trusted children to handle subscription fees. Do paper routes even exist anymore? • Deli Counter Mastered counting back change – a skill I'm still quietly proud of. • Lawn Service Learned that some adults will lie to kids to avoid paying them. • FroYo/Barista Worked for an owner with the most unfortunate hair plugs I've ever seen. • Summer Camp Counselor Specialized in working with Japanese exchange students. • Nordstrom Vacuumer My friend Jason and I would show up at 4 AM to vacuum for a few hours. That's literally all we did. • Au Pair Incredibly relaxed job. Got very tan from daily swimming. • Independent Bookstore Clerk Great job at a classic college town shop. I met so many odd characters. • Corporate Bookstore Employee Not the best experience, though I earned points with management for volunteering to wear the janky Curious George costume at events. • Video Store Clerk Watched countless great films, thanks to the excellent foreign section. • After-School Childcare Provider Spent afternoons running around with ONE MILLION kids. Bonded with the classroom rabbit. • San Francisco Tour Guide Specifically for Japanese businessmen. Just weird. What about you? What jobs did you do when you were young?

A great piece from Wonkhe on the challenges of interpreting local skills demand data. While detailed insights can be valuable, this article raises important questions about the reliability of current data methods, and stronger data solutions are clearly needed to better match local skills supply with demand. Worth a read for anyone engaged in skills policy and/or economic development!
New on Wonkhe: Gathering skills demand data to power a local skills revolution is hard work. David Kernohan appraises another attempt. https://lnkd.in/dVEj9eJY "it is undeniably fun to learn about the growing demand for secretarial skills in Cornwall or that Cheshire has a glut of education management professionals"

As the year comes to a close, many are making new resolutions. This is the perfect time to resolve yourself—not just to dream, but to lean in and lean forward. Lean in to the lessons that disappointments bring and the resilience they build. Lean forward, despite the disadvantages, knowing that every small step forward can lead to transformational change. Starting as a Senior Clerk Typist, I leaned into learning and leaned forward to grow, even through extreme challenges. At William Paterson University, established in 1855 to educate and uplift, I advanced my skills, persevered, and eventually became the first minority Executive Assistant. My journey is a reminder that when we resolve to take each step with purpose, we not only rise but create a legacy for those who come after us. Let this be the year you commit to moving forward—not just for yourself, but for the paths you’ll open for others. #LeanInAndForward #ResolveToRise #LegacyThroughLeadership #TrailblazerJourney #StepsToSuccess #PerseverancePaysOff #PathForTheFuture #UpliftAndInspire #FromClerkToLeader #ResilientAndDriven

Fam, specifically in the creative/marketing space: WHILE you seek your ideal job/career position, please consider working at a school. Public preferably, but there is currently and will always be a space for you to not only earn some bread, but teach those to make (vegan) butter from scratch. There's no need to end up being 1 of those on here begging for desperate help with a position that won't hire you nor care about you and your plead for help with bills. You hate to see it. None of us wanna earn less than what we deserve, but while you seek your greatness and compensation, earn some good change while helping your community and seeking the BIG (vegan) fish! #BreadNButta #PublicSchoolAdvocate
