I want to reshare this post I made earlier this month as the KJS Legacy Project works to raise $5,000 by the end of September to continue funding scholarships to students at Trumbull, CT and at American University. Please consider given to keep Kevin's legacy alive: On this 4th of July, we observed another sad milestone. It’s hard to believe, but it has been nine years since Kevin’s tragic passing. For his family and friends, the pain of our loss is still deeply felt. We miss his kind and caring nature and that big grin of his. He had prepared himself to do great things - to have a positive impact on the world. Kevin’s career was just starting. He had such a bright future ahead of him - so much that he wanted to accomplish. And because his life was interrupted, those of us he left behind have dedicated ourselves to carrying on his legacy - working to accomplish some of the things he never got to do. And that is what the KJS Legacy Project (KJSLP) is all about. To date, the KJSLP has helped to fund five scholarships in the AU School of Public Affairs, four internships on Capitol Hill, and two high school scholarships. This year, we seek to expand Kevin’s legacy with the goal of making our impact even greater through increased endowments at AU and by funding an endowment for the Trumbull High School Scholarship. Toward that end, we are launching the Summer 2024 KJSLP Outreach. During the months of July, August and September, we have set a goal of raising $5,000 to support our various programs. In talking with our scholarship recipients, it is clear that we are making a real impact on their career trajectory. Kevin’s life-story is a powerful example that these students relate to and use as a guide as they make decisions along the way in their life’s journey. To help them acclimate to campus life, all incoming Stonehill College students are required to take a one-credit “First-Year Experience (FYE)” course during their first semester. Volunteer faculty, staff and returning students facilitate this class. We recently asked this year’s FYE facilitators to offer their best advice on studying, figuring out the best career fit, and making friends in college.  “Accept change, confusion and new experiences,” Michael Sheehan ’25 said. “It’s completely normal to not be quite sure what you want to do. My best recommendation is to say ‘yes’ to classes or experiences outside your major. Doing my Masters in the UK changed my life. One way to do so for free is through the Chevening Awards. Prepare in 3 steps before the applications open--> 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏: 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Check if you are eligible. To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must: a) Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. b) Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended. c) Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. d) Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience. e) Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by the deadline listed on the application timeline. Include examples of challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and the positive changes you brought to your community. b) 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬: Discuss your national and international networking skills. Talk about your interactions with people from different professions and cultures, and how you plan to improve these skills to benefit your home country. c) 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐊: Explain why you want to study in the UK. Describe how your chosen courses will help your career and why UK universities are special in your field. Mention your interest in cross-cultural understanding. d) 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧: Outline your short-term and long-term career goals. Be clear and realistic, and explain how your plans will support your community or country. Relate your skills, volunteer work, and experience to these goals. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Chevening requires 2 letters of reference. A referee must know the applicant either professionally or in academics. Reference letters would be verified by the British Council once a candidate gets shortlisted. Ask for these reference letters NOW. They take time and effort. A couple of thoughts that I would like to suggest to discuss for plumbing. First the ratio needs to be changed to 1-3. You can throw all the money you want at Pre-App, OYAP etc. With 1-1 ratios all that happens is the whole pipeline is backlogged, and people leave because no one can hire them. Second, for whatever reason the Red Seal failure rate is still too high, meaning 5th year apprentices are not becoming certified, further backlogging the system because of the 1-1 ratio, no new hiring occurs. Go back to a Provincial C of Q alongside the Red Seal. Give apprentices the option which one to write. Majority of plumbers never leave their city, let alone the Province.
