The opportunity for change in Bangladesh has come with a heavy price. Nearly 1,000 Bangladeshis lost their lives fighting for democracy, mostly at the hands of the country’s security forces. In today's Daily Brief, Andrew Stroehlein looks at undoing autocracy in Bangladesh:

The current situation in Bangladesh raises significant concerns about its future trajectory. Historical precedents, such as those observed in Iraq, Sri Lanka, and Egypt, illustrate that while protests have sometimes led to the toppling of governments, the aftermath often brings even greater instability, with military interventions frequently exacerbating the situation. Although I have been supportive of Prime Minister Hasina's economic policies, which have contributed to notable growth, this has not been sufficient to preserve her political power. As individuals in Pakistan express support for these developments, it is crucial to remain vigilant and consider the potential consequences for Bangladesh's future. Any positive outcomes from Bangladesh will certainly inspire the impatient Pakistani masses to do the same, but the question remains: Is this what we need? Or should we just go with sabr & shukr? #Bangladeshprotests #Economiccrisis #Neighbour #comparingcoups

What everyone seems to be missing here, is that by the end of the first stage of this #deal, Hamas will have regained control of most of Gaza, including all the hundreds of aid trucks entering every day. Hamas will also have reinforced the dungeons, hijacked UN facilities, hospitals and graves where the 64 remaining hostages are still held, with more gunmen, and placed more women and children to serve as protective shields for those gunmen. How exactly is Israel to free those 64 brutalized hostages after day 42? Hamas has absolutely no #incentive to agree - they can retain hold of the hostages, restart the war they launched against Israel, and rely on the world to again decry any deaths or injuries to the newly returned Gazan citizens to whom both Egypt and Jordan refuse to offer temporary shelter. And when Hamas continues to run Gaza as top-dogs, having won the release of so many convicted terrorists from both its own group and on behalf of its political foes, and thereby strengthened its forces with these grateful murderers, how long do you really think it will be until it launches its next October 7? #diplomacy #fail

Bangladesh is the youngest M Population country in the world. And with a geo politic disruption playing out understand that this young population is a demographic liability. The animal spirits with the youth are high and they are highly radicalised. Modi government may have asked the military to protect the Hindu minority but there is nothing that the local law enforcing policemen and military can do given that they are outnumbered by the radicals. R@p€ and targetted killing of H com is rampant. Not only that the number of Bangladeshis fleeing their country and into India is only rising. Yes the BSF is alert and doing its best. And while we have doubled trebled our border force ironically Bangladesh military has reduced theirs. The implication is that they want to export the jihadis into India. In 1971 we may have successfully divided Pakistan into two. But today we have another jihadi Pakistan now sitting on our eastern border. And that too with a radicalised agenda. Internal politics of Bangladesh is changing rapidly while a caretaker government has been formed, the army has been torn into two. The radicals are killing their peaceful brothers and ensuring that the stage is set for a dummy government to be elected which would thrive on the whims of the ISI, Woke America and China.

Tons of food are available, and well-fed militants have been captured. What is the reality of the alleged famine in Gaza? We can ensure there’s no famine by examining the numbers in this report (not based on Hamas figures) and analyzing the images. Where does the aid end up? It reportedly goes directly to the Hamas organization, which sells it at high prices to civilians. Free Palestine from Hamas. #Timetostandupforisrael Link to report: https://lnkd.in/d643BbYX

Are you brave enough to make life saving decisions ?
#OnThisDay, April 21, 1994, during the Rwandan Genocide, the United Nations ordered 94% of troops to leave. However, Ghana's contingent of 454 soldiers disregarded the order and stayed throughout the genocide. By standing their ground, they helped save about 30,000 lives. While back in Ghana, their General, Henry Kwami Anyidoho, met with President Jerry Rawlings who scolded and questioned him about what he should have told the country if all their troops had been killed in Rwanda. Rawlings then asked the General what kept him and his men going during the genocide. "Sir, there are certain things that happen in life that are unexplainable. We were in a situation where we had to act according to the dictates of our conscience…That we wouldn't die (we didn't lose too many soldiers operating) under those circumstances, it could only be an act of God," General Anyidoho said. #HistoryVille Full story: https://lnkd.in/dMQa7UgG

very informative and self explanatory
Some conflicts receive significant media attention while others hardly feature in the news. In 2023, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and Mali received the least media attention per civilian casualty, followed closely by Cameroon, Haiti, Myanmar, and the DR Congo. CIVIC’s new POC Trends Report focuses attention on some under-covered conflicts and the changing threats to civilians. Day 390. A lot of countries are outraged that Israel voted to ban UNRWA. But where is the outrage that UNRWA employees participated in the atrocities of October 7? Where is the outrage that so many UNRWA employees have links to Hamas? Where is the outrage that Hamas has used UNRWA as a shield for its terrorism? Where is the outrage that UNRWA teachers are indoctrinating Gazan children to hate? Where? This is a photo of Jonathan Samerano (21). In a video circulated months and months ago, Jonathan’s lifeless body was seen being kidnapped by a UNRWA employee to Gaza. Where is the outrage? And why don’t we demand better for Palestinians and Israelis alike? PS. Demand the release of the hostages.

Parachinar is the small Shia town at the west of Pakistan. From the last few nights shias in the Parachinar are under attack and the town is completely surrounded from all 4 sides by sunni militants groups and terr organisations like Afghan Taliban, TTP, Sipah-e-Sahaba & ASWJ. Shia lives are so worthless that there is absolutely 0 coverage of this disaster on Media. The State and the Army of Pakistan is silently watching the genocide and soon they will disable mobile phone networks to stop the news coming out. If our activism is limited to only gaza while there is a ongoing shia genocide in our own country, then we are just a hypocrite and shame on us!

Insightful analysis
Author of I is for Infidel, 2022 Fellow at Shorenstein Center at Harvard Kennedy School and recently retired from the amazing Associated Press
This region is stunning and the people of both Pakistan and Afghanistan are extraordinary. A look at recent history tells us the region has been used and abused by many. It also tells us isolationism has failed in the past and is failing now.
