We must avoid realising a conformist arts sector, where beliefs may be policed by colleagues or bureaucracies. To reflect the breadth of artistic talent in the UK, FITA aims to a support the arts to properly commit to artistic freedom with the mechanisms and confidence to actively protect it." "We need to nurture excellence, which takes time and effort, and look for more than just the Instagram slogan of the week. We can respect our artistic history while responding to the present. Finally, could we please stop posturing, stop pretending, stop being empathic and earnest and try instead to embody values of discipline, integrity and impartiality. Abstract : The alarming results of the European elections in June 2024 showed that far-right parties are gaining a foothold in a growing number of countries. In this context of resurgent far-right movements, culture and more precisely art is at the core of ideological battles and should be the focus of all attention. Art is not only a way to express our feelings or emotions. It is a way of touching the world, of raising our voices when we are prevented from speaking. Art is everywhere and it must continue to be so. Yet, as threats and intimidation from far-right movements increase, artists are led to self-censor, something that should not happen in democracies. In today's global context, it is common for the fashion, art and entertainment industries to incorporate elements from diverse cultures. However, this cultural exchange raises important legal questions. Determining whether symbols, practices or products of a culture are subject to recognition, and thus whether their use is conditional on consent, is a potentially controversial task because of the possible collision of intellectual property rights and respect for the traditions of indigenous communities. Alan Bowness’s theory of circles suggests that recognition for modern artists occurs in concentric circles, with legitimacy initially established among peers and later by critics, the market, and the public. Artists’ trajectories involve accumulating recognition as they move from smaller to larger circles, driven by different legitimizing agents. The first circle, that of peers, consists of emerging contemporary artists – equals. The second, as per Bowness, includes art critics, encompassing curators and museum directors. The third involves the market, comprising collectors, gallery owners, and dealers, who, through commercial operations, elevate artists to the Olympus for the public—the largest concentric circle—to consecrate them (Bowness, 1989). #recognition #legitimation #contemporaryart #alanbowness #artists #phd #circles #kaws #consultancy #thepartners
