The Biden/ Harris Title IX rules took effect today but not in all states. Some states have sued due to the new LGBTQ+ more specifically the transgender provisions in the new rules. Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination at schools that receive federal funding, will grant explicit safeguards for queer and transgender students and school staff, parenting and pregnant bodies as well as sexual misconduct/ assault victims. In addition to Australia's Catholic school system, 96% of private schools are religious-affiliated. 1 in 3 students is enrolled in one or the other. Most Australians would be unaware that these schools, by law, can discriminate against #LGBTQIA+ students and teachers simply for being who they are. This post is personal for me. I've lost a child to another country where their human rights are protected. Their story is not dissimilar to those in Equality Australia's ad below. They experienced bullying and discrimination including the following destructive comment from their religious instruction teacher in year 8: "While Christians are an accepting lot, God does not approve of homosexuality." Over time, they went from being an extroverted, funny, confident child to an anxious, insecure and isolated kid. It was heartbreaking. 1 in 10 Australians identify as #LGBTQIA+. In a modern Australia, are we comfortable with religious freedoms defying human rights? Or would we prefer to foster a kinder, fairer, more inclusive Australia where the rights of one group are not elevated above another? If the latter, please share this ad with your MP and ask them to stand up for equality when the religious discrimination bill is debated once again. In the face of Trump's unabashed ambitions to consolidate power and dismantle the hard-won rights of marginalized groups, the imperative to resist authoritarianism and defend democracy has never been more urgent. The prospect of a second Trump administration poses a grave threat to the progress we have made towards a more inclusive and equitable society. Amidst these tumultuous times, the call to action is clear: we must mobilize the forces of equality and justice to ensure that our voices are heard, our rights are protected, and our values are upheld. With 75 million Equality Voters standing as a formidable force for change, the opportunity to elect pro-equality champions who will champion human rights and defend the principles of democracy has never been more critical. In a haunting dystopian narrative, the ominous specter of a future where democracy crumbles and human rights are brutally stripped away looms ominously on the horizon. The relentless grip of a tyrannical ruler threatens to plunge a new generation into a nightmarish abyss of despair, where mental health issues and suicidal cases spiral out of control. The chilling reality of individuals losing their freedoms, with no one spared from the ruthless hand of oppression, paints a harrowing picture of a society on the brink of collapse.
