Want to find chemical-free ways to deal with varroa - and that work in harmony with your bees' biology? Check out this book.
“A welcome addition... a handy reference point” “Written by beekeepers for beekeepers.” “Diagrams are well-used. Each method is explained in text ... with photos and diagrams detailing timings and actions required. QR code to quickly scan to load a YouTube video. It’s a modern book" Praise from Patrick Dawkins, New Zealand beekeeper and editor of the Apiarist’s Advocate for Summer Brood Interruption for vital honey bee colonies from Uzunov, Gabel and Büchler. Patrick is founder and owner of both Apiarist's Advocate eMagazine and news website, and Pyramid Apiaries, a Marlborough beekeeping business providing pollination services, queen bees to the beekeeping industry and honey production – so he knows well the threat that the varroa mite poses to honey bees and honey production. #bees #beekeeping #honeybees #independentpublisher #summerbrood

Unparalleled Devotion: The Eccentricities of Hornbill Love If this isn't devotion, we don't know what is... While this hornbill dutifully incubates her eggs, her devoted partner goes to extreme lengths, delivering all her food directly into her newfound fortress, a tree hollow 🌳 Did you know? Hornbills are notorious for their unusual nesting habits. Not content with a simple nest, they seek out tree hollows, often sealing themselves inside with a unique cement made from their own feces, mud, and food scraps. It's a peculiar practice, but it offers unparalleled protection for their precious eggs and chicks. Did you know that catkins (and pussy willows) are actually flowers? They are usually wind pollinated, but also provide important food for early rising insects. Catkins can be easily spottted in late winter as tree stems are bare and the bright yellow stand out. Catkins can be found on Birch, Aspen, Sweet Chestnut, Hazel, Poplar and Alder trees). #spring #signsofspring #science #primaryscience #primary #education #outdoorlearning #seasonalchange #seasons #trees #catkins

ABC's reserve network includes at least ten reserves where this week’s Bird Of The Week can be found. ⛰️ Take a virtual trip to the Andes & meet the Barred Fruiteater! Pipreola arcuata (scientific name) is the largest representative of the genus Pipreola, a group of slow-moving, rather chunky Neotropical birds known as Fruiteaters. 🍊🍇 True to its name, both sexes of Barred Fruiteater have barred black-and-yellow underparts, as well as bright coral-colored legs and beaks, black-tipped tails, and yellow spotted wings. 🖤💛 Pipreola arcuata has a wide distribution up and down the Andes; however, it’s fairly simple to determine which part of its range a Barred Fruiteater calls home. What feature makes this distinction possible?? 👀 See the difference in the full Bird of the Week profile: https://lnkd.in/gkw8h5JA. #BirdOfTheWeek #BarredFruiteater #BirdNerd #AndeanBirds #PipreolaArcuata #pipreola #EyeSpy #BirdConservation

From ideation to execution - this is the strategic marketing thought leadership that I’m made of: So proud to share that not one… but TWO marketing efforts I led in 2023 were selected as winners from over 325 submissions in the ALA Core 2024 PR Xchange contest, and will be recognized at the ALA conference PR Xchange event in San Diego at the end of June. My pieces won in the “Special Events - Print” and the “Exhibits - Born Digital” categories for libraries in our budget category. Special Events - Print: we created a memorable experience for library visitors by decorating the inside of one of our elevators, floor to ceiling, with positive thoughts as an activation for #BuckeyeLove, an annual campus-wide celebration of acts of kindness. Exhibits - Born Digital: we transformed one of our library’s early 1900s medical history artifacts into a digital exhibit, innovatively repurposing a geospatial mapping platform (ArcGIS) into a historical storytelling vehicle. Eternal appreciation to my amazing Ohio State Health Sciences Library teammates, Courtney Fleming and Anthony Baker, CMI, who embrace my crazy ideas and help me bring them to life. #Marketing #MedLibs #Libraries #ALA #OhioState #MarketingInnovation

Sadly, over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared! We can all do our bit to support these brilliant bugs, gang! Why not plant flowers rich in nectar, such as lavender and bluebells, which will help bees find the food they need? And when your family are buying honey, try to choose varieties that are locally made, to support our honey bees and their beekeepers!
