A wonderful and brilliant (and very funny!) talk from Sir Ken Robinson. Especially from the 2:50 mark. Absolutely worth the watch and your time. Education is the silver bullet, and yet we're doing it all wrong. We squander our children's talents, and we do it "pretty ruthlessly". We stigmatize mistakes. We frighten each other with the idea of being wrong. Where does this come from? We're not born this way. We don't grow into creativity; we grow out of it - we're educated out of our creativity. That's not to say that being wrong is the same as being creative; it's that if you're not prepared to be wrong you'll never come up with anything original. So don't be frightened of being wrong, be prepared to make mistakes, and dare to be original. Shakespeare was in somebody's English class, wasn't he? #creativity #original #education #innovation #itsoktomakemistakes

In a world surrounded by conflict and desperate for hope, how will we take action? Because the education of children is the root system underlying other societal systems, we believe that the solutions to the problems we face will come when we transform education systems. Let's teach effectively and wisely. Let's teach a Solutionary Generation. #HumaneEducation #SolutionaryMovement #SystemsThinking https://lnkd.in/g6X5HJbm

Let’s interrupt the cycle from the beginning so we can work well, live well, serve well, and lead well! ❣️ Listen to Kristin Ransford Hiemstra, M.Ed., CCPC, PCC’s TedTalk. As a teacher I’ve deescalated a 2nd grader’s fit of anger by teaching him a quick somatic exercise to close the stress loop and reset his nervous system. He was one outburst away from suspension. As a parent I’ve helped facilitate a healthy negotiation between my 5th grade son and his teachers. Enabling him to speak up while being accountable. Enabling the teachers to see a different perspective on how his fear was showing up as anger. And eventually helping them establish some trust and cooperation. As a young person my son is able to tell me upfront when he’s just venting vs arguing with me. And I can help him determine when to wrap it up and move on. As an employee I’ve experienced the negative business impact of leaders who haven’t learned these skills. All to say that these skills are NOT common sensicle but like Kristin says they are 💯 TEACHABLE! The tools and knowledge are available. Given the state of our world, it seems negligent for our education systems to not heed the warning and take advantage of the offer to help! Will you raise your hand, too, to help the revolution?!

It's hard to believe it's been nearly 20 years since Sir Ken Robinson’s unforgettable TED Talk challenged how we think about education. His message about creativity, purpose, and the limitations of traditional schooling feels more relevant than ever, especially in our post-COVID schools. Here’s why his ideas still resonate today: 1️⃣ Neglecting creativity drains your energy: Ignoring what truly inspires you leads to burnout. 2️⃣ Avoiding what matters holds you back: Straying from your core purpose makes it harder to stay motivated. 3️⃣ Prioritizing what matters leads to success: Focus on what truly counts, and everything else will follow. Let’s lift each other up by staying focused on what matters! #TeacherSupport #PurposefulTeaching #FocusOnWhatMatters

For some years, now, I have reflected on the basic conventional methods to manage students’ behaviour. As teachers, we were always taught positive reinforcement worked better than punishment. But now research is showing that even positive reinforcement can have unwanted side effects . Perone M. (2003) What if we make the time to really connect and get to know our students and understand the reasons behind their behaviour. In this enlightening TEDTalk Prof Stuart Ablon states that students will do well if they can, not that students will do well only if they want to. I share his sentiment. I’ve worked with adolescents for more than 30 years, and I’ve had my fair share of seriously disruptive and hard to manage teenagers. Turns out that most often these were the ones I enjoyed working with the most. Disruptive, attention seeking behaviour is not a one size fits all problem. We can label the behaviour and students will fall in and start behaving in that way routinely. Or we can work to collaboratively mentor and support each student to come up with their own solutions to the problems they face. Helping them to develop the skills to figure out why they are behaving the way they are and how to change their behaviour is not as hard as we may think, but it does take time … #studentwellbeing #studentwellness #teacherdevelopment #FLInT #studentsupport #studentsuccess

Do schools kill #creativity? I'd say so. But, does this matter? Again, yes. What would our world look like if we did center our work and systems on creativity? It's something I imagine every day. Sir Ken Robinson (video attached) describes how our educational system is failing our generations as it continues to teach through a system set up during the Industrial Revolution. Cheers to our upcoming #technologicalrevolution .

🌟 I just stumbled upon Brené Brown's 2017 SXSW talk today, and wow, it’s just as relevant now as it was back then! 🌟 Fellow educators, have you ever explored Brené Brown’s insights on shame, guilt, humiliation, and embarrassment in the classroom? Her perspectives are eye-opening. While guilt might tell a student, "I did something bad," shame goes deeper, whispering "I am bad." That's a crucial distinction and a weight no student should bear. Here’s the core message for us as educators: Our interactions in the classroom have the power to either uplift or undermine our students. Brené spoke about leveraging empathy and allowing room for errors—because that’s how real learning happens, right? Even though her speech was years ago, the lessons feel incredibly current. I’m trying to implement these ideas into my teaching now. How about you? How do you support students in handling tough emotions? Any tips on creating a compassionate learning environment? Let’s share and learn together! #SafeLearning #Education #BreneBrown #EmpathyInTeaching #ClassroomCulture https://lnkd.in/g-DAWft5
