As we mark World Day Against Child Labour, we reflect on the heartbreaking reality faced by children behind bars, many of whom ended up in conflict with the law due to their experiences with child labour. These children were often brought to cities as house helps and subjected to maltreatment, robbing them of their innocence, childhood, and dreams. At Headfort Foundation for Justice, our mission is to advocate for the rights and welfare of these children. We are committed to raising awareness about the pervasive issue of child labour globally, particularly focusing on those who have been exploited and marginalized. Through various initiatives, including campaigns and outreach programs, we strive to shed light on the urgent need to address this violation of children’s fundamental rights and work towards eradicating exploitative child labour practices. Together, we have the power to effect change. By increasing awareness, pushing for stronger child protection laws, ensuring access to quality education, and creating opportunities for vulnerable families, we can break the cycle of poverty and exploitation that perpetuates child labour. #EndChildLabour #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour #HumanRights #Headfortfoundationforjustice

To end oppression and decolonize the "free" world defunding the police is an inadequate measure. If one understands the law as an instrument of oppression designed to protect the wealth/power status quo, crime needs to be understood as a social construct designed to justify its use in service to oppression. In this regard, decolonization and realization of our constitutional ideals will require both the redefinition of crime and the redesign of the mechanisms of law. The police are one small part of a much larger system of oppressive division and domination. Child Labor Day is observed on June 12th and aims to raise awareness about the issue of child labor and advocate for children's rights. The day was first celebrated in 2002 by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which launched a global campaign to combat child labor. Some facts about Child Labor Day include: 1. According to the ILO, there are currently 152 million children globally who are involved in child labor. 2. Child labor is often associated with poverty and lack of access to education and social protection. #12thjune #misbahqadri #childlabor, #protectchildren, #educationrights, #endchildlabor, #childhoodlearning

Deputy CEO Youth Justice at QATSICPP | Child Death Review Board QFCC | First Nations | Housing & Homelessness | Youth & Family Services | DV Prevention
What does connection mean to you and your family? Could you picture your life without it? With the current Youth Justice Reform Public Hearings taking place across Queensland this month with the Queensland Parliament, it’s essential that we remain focused on the facts and the genuine wellbeing of all children and young people during these discussions. Disturbingly First Nations children continue to be over-represented inside the youth justice system with over 70% of children held in detention being Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. As we make up 5.7% of our National population this is beyond shocking! In the June quarter 2023, First Nations young people were 29 times as likely to be in detention than non-Indigenous young people (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). While I continue to watch media sensationalise youth crime and listen to the racist commentary, I can’t help but reflect on my own families journey in searching for connection and the generational disadvantage that limits connection for our people. Until we can co-design a tailored youth justice system that is fair for all children (including First Nations children) we will not find connection, and our system will remain a failure. We need culturally sensitive, inclusive, and nurturing processes that allows children to feel seen, supported and heard. Prevention is so important but we need to be able to see the past and connect with it, in order to work with it. A 🔥sensational🔥 report. I'm pretty new to this, but it feels rare to see something so exhaustively researched and far-reaching that is also so clear and direct. TLDR: Locking kids up does not make the community safer (that's a direct quote.) Australia continually fails to implement reforms that work, in part because of deliberate polarisation, sensationalism and fear-mongering around the issue. We urgently need to overhaul the current system in favour of one based in safety, wellbeing and the fundamental human rights of children. Addressing the injustice, inequity and suffering that precede crime is the best way to prevent it.
This week’s top report is… ‘Help way earlier!’ How Australia can transform child justice to improve safety and wellbeing ➡️ apo.org.au/node/328020 🚸 A catalyst for evidence-based reform of child justice and wellbeing systems across Australia. 🚸 The Australian Human Rights Commission report, built on decades of national and international evidence about what actually works to reduce child offending, argues that current approaches to 'youth crime’ fundamentally misunderstand the problem. The authors propose transforming the child justice system to address the social determinants of crime by making child safety and wellbeing a national priority. National Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds: “We need to turn our attention and our resources to addressing the underlying causes, and to the barriers that stop us taking national action on evidence-based systemic reform.” The focus of the report’s 24 recommendations is 🔸 elevating child justice and wellbeing to a national priority, 🔸 coordinating action across Australia’s federation, and 🔸 ensuring that systemic reform is evidence-based and grounded in human rights. #evidencebased #humanrights #reform #youthjustice #childjustice #youthcrime

We’re members of the Campaign to End US Child Labor, joining hands with nonprofit organisations, academia, and trade unions, because surprise: there’s a child labour crisis in the US and it's surging! And here's another shocker: numerous states have or are in the process of sacrificing children’s interests by weakening protections and making it easier to hire children, regardless of whether it interferes with their schooling. The Campaign is calling for the following common sense actions from federal and state government and other relevant stakeholders including businesses: 🇺🇸 Close child labour loopholes between agricultural and non-agricultural work 🇺🇸 Increase enforcement and establish stronger consequences for child labour violations 🇺🇸 Create legislation that holds corporations to account 🇺🇸 Develop stronger labour rights laws and working conditions 🇺🇸 Establish a social protection system which prevents all children and families from falling into poverty Children need to be prioritised and protected. There’s no excuse. Join us in protecting children in the US: https://lnkd.in/eH3T5jPM #EndUSChildLabor #EndChildLabor #ChildLabour #WorldJusticeDay
