Wade Crowfoot just curious when these structures are installed has thought gone into soil media to support vegetation growing on the installation? I ask because soil media can be amended with forest derived biochar. This would help to keep vegetation green longer, with less clay (weight) on the structure. Then there is the fact that using forest derived biochar can also reduce risk of ignition and spread of fire in the same habitat.

Today is World Wetlands day, a time to celebrate our vast NC wetland types and the wildlife species that rely upon them.🌅 From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the sandhills to the coastal plain, North Carolina boasts a variety of ecosystems, and positioned throughout these regions are some of the state’s most biologically diverse habitat types: wetlands. Many people do not realize the importance of wetlands to our state’s plants, fish and wildlife, and humans. In addition to providing food, water, cover, and areas for reproduction for a vast majority of species, more than 70 percent of North Carolina’s species listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern depend on wetlands for survival (North Carolina Wetlands). Like many of the natural spaces within North Carolina and beyond, wetlands are in danger of being detrimentally impacted or even destroyed by habitat destruction, degradation, and fragmentation. NCWF is committed to being a voice for these habitats and the fish and wildlife they support. As much as 87% of the world's wetlands has been lost over the past 300 years, with much of this loss happening after 1900, despite their value to the human population. Just some of the 72 This image shows wildlife rescuer and carer Emma from Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter weighing just some of her 72 rescued Grey-headed Flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) pups in care. At one stage Emma had 109 to look after! Wrapped in ‘mumma rolls’ to keep warm and secure before being weighed, the majority of these pups were found alone in colonies. Why? Maybe their mums didn't make it home due to being caught in barbed wire, illegal fruit-tree netting or were electrocuted. There was also a starvation event this year. By helping disperse pollen and seeds up the east coast of Australia, Grey-headed Flying-foxes are keystone species (which is an animal that helps define an entire ecosystem, and without them, ecosystems would be dramatically different or even cease to exist altogether) and so are vital for the health and regeneration of many of our forests. This #NationalWildlifeDay, let's talk about one of Nevada’s most fascinating and vulnerable residents: the Pygmy Rabbit. 🐇🐇🐇 These little critters, the smallest rabbits in North America, are more than just adorable. They play a key role in our sagebrush ecosystems, but they’re facing some serious challenges. In the last 40 years, Nevada has lost over 9 million acres of sagebrush habitat to wildfires. 🔥😢 This is bad news for the Pygmy Rabbit, who relies on sagebrush for food and shelter. With threats like habitat loss, climate change, and industrial activities on the rise, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is now considering federal protection for these tiny heroes under the Endangered Species Act. 🌱 At the May Arboretum Society, we are committed to supporting the protection of wildlife and their habitats within the May Arboretum. The gardens are home to a diverse array of plants and animals, including some of these Pygmy Rabbits. 🙋♀️ Want to help? There’s nothing quite like spotting an elusive Blanding’s Turtle in the wilderness when out and about in the Kawarthas. This beautiful turtle is easily recognizable by its brilliant yellow neck and dome-like shell. Two of the main threats to Blanding’s Turtles, which are listed as a Threatened species in Ontario, are habitat fragmentation and car strikes. Kawartha Land Trust is working with supporters like you to conserve more natural lands and protect vital wildlife corridors. For species like the Blanding’s Turtle, whose existence hinges on the ability to traverse considerable distances for nesting and finding overwintering sites, these corridors are necessary to their continued survival.
