It's still #NationalWildernessMonth and, although #WildernessWednesday was yesterday, we believe visiting the wilderness shouldn't be limited to a single day a week. It’s no secret that spending time outdoors promotes psychological well-being and improves physical health. But, did you also know there is a growing body of evidence showing that nature-based therapy can help reduce stress and mitigate trauma symptoms? Might we suggest getting out to the nearest wilderness area for the ultimate reset? Before your excursion, we recommend a bit of prep work. Ensure that you have the appropriate permit (day-use or overnight) and research how to enter these special areas from nearby, reliable parking areas. Learn to use a map and compass so you can travel safely in the backcountry. #Wilderness60 Read more about wilderness areas at https://lnkd.in/gYPwfxbS. 📷: Zack Law, USDA Forest Service packer and stock handler, takes other agency employees on a day ride into a wilderness area, May 15, 2024 in the Gila National Forest. The Gila National Forest’s pack mules and horses are an important, yet often under-celebrated resource. Housed at the Wilderness and Glenwood ranger stations, they are indispensable in managing rugged, remote settings, especially on the expansive Gila Wilderness, where work must be completed in a traditional, low-tech fashion in order to maintain the area’s natural state. Our natural soundscapes are falling silent as bird populations decline. Humans are interacting less with nature, in what is sometimes referred to as an “extinction of experience”. This has been linked to deteriorating public health and wellbeing. Birds are often colourful and their song provides the soundtrack to our outdoor activities. Listening to a dawn chorus should be like listening to a full orchestra, with strings, woodwind, brass and percussion impressing with their volume and complexity. But if the only ones who turn up are the bass drum and a trumpeter, the music would be underwhelming, if not boring. There is growing evidence about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including reducing risks of heart disease, diabetes and anxiety. Yet while the general benefits of being outside in nature may seem intuitive, the contributions of natural sounds to this are less understood. An hour’s exposure to diverse and loud birdsong can lead to feelings of optimism and relaxation. It is hoped businesses and people will be inspired to invest in conservation and promote nature engagement in creative settings, such as workplace courtyards or restaurants with outdoor seating. How are you using nature soundscapes to improve your health and wellbeing being or the people around you? #birds #nature #environment #healthandwellbeing #sustainability #regenerative #education #climatechange https://lnkd.in/eqe2pczf

Accidentally inter-gen. I love such “accidental” moments because they are the most authentic. During a forest therapy experience, there is spaciousness - for heart-full connections to happen; for authentic conversations to flow; for one to remember our relationships with self-others-nature. In most programmes/activities there are often many tagged agendas, goals, KPIs. Having goals in mind aren’t exactly bad but being fixated with them with no room for different perspectives and flexibility also means there is no space for authenticity. I have seen many such beautiful moments during the experiences. Those between the young and the old, strangers, neighbours who see each other almost everyday but haven’t spoken and with the little animals we encounter on the experience. As Forest Therapy guides, we have no expectations for every experience and absolutely make no claims on how it would be for the participants. We are all unique human beings and our lived experiences will also invite us to connect with nature differently. We can hold more of such brave spaces for one to more human. We don’t need more of “oh they need this, they need that - because that’s “good” for them”. Who are we to determine what’s good for anyone else anyway? Space is so underrated and yet essential. #spaciousness #foresttherapy #wellbeing #forestbathing #intergenerational
