Kriton Kuci, our RECAS Fellow, is currently working on the project "Redefining Tourism Narratives: Navigating Beyond Banal Nationalism in Southeast Europe." This study explores the intricate relationship between banal nationalism and tourism in Southeast Europe, with a particular focus on "patriotic tourism" in Albania. Kriton's research reveals how nationalistic sentiments are perpetuated through tourism narratives and practices, often driven by political agendas. His work examines how these dynamics reinforce national identities and deepen societal divisions in a region historically marked by ethnic and political tensions. Importantly, the study advocates for alternative tourism models that promote shared futures, cross-cultural understanding, and collaboration. Drawing inspiration from responsible tourism, cultural exchange programs, and community-based tourism, Kriton proposes innovative approaches to foster a more inclusive and interconnected future. How do tourists in your town make you feel? A study co-authored by #PolyUSHTM Ph.D. graduate Dr Shiqin Zhang, Research Assistant Professor Dr Nan Chen and Chair Professor Prof Cathy Hsu shows that Hong Kong natives have complex emotional responses to visitors from the mainland. The paper may help improve host–visitor relations in Hong Kong and abroad as tourist numbers pick up in the post-pandemic era. The study setting is particularly relevant as mainland Chinese tourists become more adventurous travellers. Providing Indigenous communities with tools and training to enhance visibility and self-empowerment through Storytelling and Ethical Travel Marketing
Thanks to Sustainability Leaders United for sharing my thoughts on Community-Based Tourism in #urban environments. When I started working in the SLUMS of Rio de Janeiro I realised that - beyond the stigma and the misrepresentations - there were many misconceptions about tourism, especially if we consider that form of tourism owned, managed and delivered by the community itself for its benefit, that I refer to as Community-Based Tourism or CBT. People simply could not believe that it was possible to have CBT in slums. I always loved challenges, and, back in 2007, I thought that my field research could have a positive impact on the real life of those urban communities if someone was bold enough to share the real stories. That's why I dedicated my Master's Dissertation of my Brazilian course of studies to exploring the matter (now a book published on Amazon, only in portuguese, unfortunately, though >> https://lnkd.in/dhMqawqX) I believe that it is quite restrictive to think that CBT is only possible in rural areas of the so-called 'developed country' (a term which I have never been keen to use for the controversy that the concept "development" carries, but that it is another story) or 'global South'. I met great and successful CBT projects in SEVERAL urban environments. Beyond Rio de Janeiro > https://lnkd.in/d3gd_Dkh https://lnkd.in/dPsCKRN8 https://lnkd.in/dEQAC75z in BRAZIL I also found them in Sāo Paulo > https://lnkd.in/dEEQjWcD https://lnkd.in/dGYEMxRG in Salvador > https://lnkd.in/d3FxChRM https://lnkd.in/dbEbyzTy In Santiago - CHILE > https://lnkd.in/dr8GSKsg In Kigali - RWANDA > https://lnkd.in/dV7HfyfW And I am aware of many others in Nairobi - KENYA > ... in Cape Town - SOUTH AFRICA > ... as well as in Medellin - COLOMBIA > ... and in Buenos Aires - ARGENTINA > ... in New Delhi - INDIA > ... So, yes, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) can exist in an urban environment. What do you think❓ Have you ever experienced CBT in an urban environment❓
🤝👥 "I believe that urban communities should also have a central role if tourism exists within their territory. Any external actor that would like to offer tours there should take some measures that guarantee the participation of its members and a local positive impact. Employing community guides is a basic option that an external agency could implement. However, supporting the training and professional development of the guides would be a much more responsible form of giving back to the community." > Elisa Spampinato, Community Storyteller at TravellerStoryteller, UK Find out how community-based tourism can contribute towards local development, social innovation, and inclusiveness in our interview with Elisa from 2020. She also shares insights from her in-depth research on the importance of involving locals in the development of tourism “products” and activities – be it in the famed favelas of Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, or the country’s rural areas. https://lnkd.in/eNBKUjA #SustainableTourism #Inclusivity #CommunityBasedTourism #CBT #SlumTourism #CommunityDevelopment
