Legal nurse consultant Not every nurse works in a hospital. Legal nurse consultants work with lawyers on cases involving medical malpractice, injury, or insurance fraud. They make around $88,126 annually, but some charge up to $150 per hour. 3. Nurse researcher Love data and patient care? Nurse researchers design and conduct studies to improve healthcare. These brainy nurses earn about $97,332 a year for their efforts. 4. Strike travel nurse Travel nurses who step in during hospital strikes can earn premium pay. The average salary is $80,321, but that number can spike during emergencies. 5. Per diem registered nurse Per diem nurses fill in when hospitals need extra hands.
