Nearly $1.5 billion in infrastructure improvements are either currently underway or planned along the 70s corridor to keep up with the needs of the freight and logistics industry. On I-70 alone, the St. Louis region handles more than 36,000 freight trucks daily — many of which serve the industrial facilities located along the corridor.   The bi-state region recognizes how important this corridor is to the economic vitality of the region and is committed to putting forth the resources needed to ensure the corridor remains a viable asset. Multiple investments are planned for I-70 and I-270, with the goal of giving aging interstates and bridges running through the heart of the bi-state St. Louis region an overhaul to reduce traffic congestion, while improving safety. These investments are supporting multimodal connectivity, adding capacity to our freight network and providing global access to shippers and carriers throughout the world.   One of the highest priority improvement projects is the new I-270 Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River. The project will replace the existing bridge – constructed in 1966 – with a dual structure that features three traffic lanes and 10-foot shoulders on each side. 🚂🚧 BNSF VALLEY REGIONAL COMPLEX 🚧🚂 Texas-based BNSF has been working for years on plans for a rail intermodal site, where freight is transported between railcars and trucks, and an industrial center across more than 4,000 acres in the Wittmann area, located in the far northwest Valley. BNSF received initial approval from the city of Surprise for a general plan amendment last April as the first step before annexing and rezoning the property in Surprise city limits. But the company has changed course, as it started the process in May for rezoning 4,300 acres with Maricopa County, rather than through the city of Surprise. The effort would include a comprehensive plan amendment with the county for 839 acres of the overall site. The company said it currently expects to start work on the project by late 2025 with initial operations anticipated to commence in 2028. BNSF expects to receive zoning approval for development by December and start the development planning process in early 2025. The overall master-planned complex will comprise: ~1,770-acre intermodal facility to serve as a transfer hub for rail shipments on the north portion of the site ~1,420-acre logistics park for warehouses and distribution space in the central portion ~1,131-acre logistics center with rail-served and shovel-ready sites to support industry on the south portion ~on-site water and wastewater treatment facilities across 22 acres In total, the industrial portions of the site will have capacity to accommodate up to 18 million square feet of leasable building space at full buildout. For perspective, that square footage is equivalent to roughly 123 Costco stores. BNSF said it plans to acquire grandfathered groundwater rights for wells to serve the site, obtain power through Arizona Public Service and secure gas through Southwest Gas. The overall site is expected to require about 150 megawatts of power at full buildout, which is equivalent to about 24,000 homes worth of power. #bnsf #railroad #transportation #goods #ericcook
