I spent this morning meeting a software engineer over at The Eagle Labs for a coffee and a catch-up. We chatted about football coaching, politics, the gaming industry, old bosses, doomed relationships, old colleagues and mutual connections. We chatted for about and hour around a bunch of stuff that in theory had nothing to do with why we were meeting. We then chatted about tech stacks, career plans, potential employers and salary expectations. This was about 5 minutes of discussion. I now have a really good idea of where this person would fit and where they would likely get bored. The first company I suggested to him didnt match any of their "pre-requisites" and they were really excited for me to do some more digging. I know they would be better suited to a hybrid role with a Glasgow based team than a fully remote position without the interaction - but I also know that wouldnt be a hard line as he could probably work with me and the rest of the crew at the Eagle labs and fill the gap that working remotely could create. The thing is - most of what makes recruitment effective is nothing to do with skills and everything to do with people. I need to find them a senior/lead position, weighted to frontend but ideally fullstack - but it's a checkbox in a sea of other information - most of which doesnt follow a script.
