Just came across this on YouTube; clear example of how our nation's healthcare system is broken. #nurses are a lifeforce to healthcare; and disregarding the biopsychosocial needs is dangerous. Feel free to weigh in on this issue. #healthcarereform#publichealth#patientadvocacy
RNAO member & #NursingStudent Yu Xin Xia shares his #nursing story: "We need a robust nursing voice at every level of government to deliver equitable and feasible health-care solutions."

Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL excellent post.
I’m going to add an additional dimension to this.
👉Not only do we as nurses need to be at different tables, 🍽️we need to better prepare for the meals
1) We should thoroughly understand the issues that are being discussed. We should also ensure that if we’re not the expert, that we bring them along or give up our seat to them. Don’t show up to the table without some background information. At least take a look at the menu…and then assess who is there, and who is not. What issues should be raised that are not listed? And if you’re an expert, bring someone with you who can learn and develop their own expertise.
2) Know both sides (or better yet, ALL sides) of an issue. There’s no better way to prepare for conversations than to know the arguments of proponents AND detractors.
3)The Nursing Community Coalition and the Nursing Organizations Alliance (NOA) are great places to review the standings of member nursing associations…if your organization is not listed, ask why. This is one of the best advocacy groups out there.

#Nurses - we aren't going to move the needle for our profession, by staying at our own tables.
We must start pushing our way into the tables where we have been absent, attending the #conferences where nurses have been invisible, and being in the political rooms where we simply have never existed.
For our profession to rise, it no longer suits us to speak only to ourselves, negotiate amongst our own profession.
Nursing is the largest profession in healthcare, but we are absent in nearly every healthcare setting where decisions are being made for healthcare and nursing.
No longer.
From this day forward - it is time there are nurses at every conference, every table, where healthcare is being discussed.
Please list below places, conferences, associations where we need nurses to start showing up in mass - it's time we change #history and the #futureofnursing.

Nurses’ time is indispensable, yet they spend a significant portion of their day on non-value-added tasks that pull them away from patient care. TigerConnect has identified 4 opportunities to increase nurse productivity with a clinical communication and collaboration (CC&C) solution. Download this infographic to see how nurses can take advantage of these time-saving opportunities to take back over 2 hours per day.

In 2024, less than 1% of healthcare systems have a nurse sitting on their board of directors (Beckers Hospital Review, 2024), yet nurses comprise 59% of the healthcare workforce (World Health Organization, 2020).
Bonus fact:
-900,000 nurses are expected to leave the profession by 2027 (Gruzd, 2023).
The math is pretty simple.

Healthcare doesn't have time not to put nurses on boards!
I'm amplifying this post by Angie Howell, DM, RN, BSN, MPH, NE-BC, because the message needs to be heard. Less than 1% of healthcare systems have a nurse on their board of directors. Nurses make up the majority of the healthcare workforce, but our voices stop at patient care.
I found this great article by Susan Reinhard, which tells great stories about the unique insights nurses bring to the bigger healthcare delivery conversation. We think about quality indicators and patient outcomes, overnight and weekend admissions, and how to design units for ergonomics, workflow, and efficiency. Our lived experiences give us insights that those who have never provided hands-on care have.
It's time for us to flip the script on the idea that nurses only provide care. We are professionals, business leaders, care experts, educators, innovators, and so much more!
