Firm size matters when it comes to being a CMO. A CMO at a startup needs different skills and expertise than a CMO of PepsiCo. It was great fun to partner with Jonathan Metrick to learn about how CMO roles evolve as firms mature -- and what this means for CMO retooling. CMOs want to be hyper aware of these shifts and develop a game plan for gaining the experience prior to needing it. It also means that if you leave a big company like PepsiCo to take a startup job, you need to make sure that you have the skills to be successful. Working at a big company doesn't necessarily endow people with the ability to be successful at a startup.
